On the verge on a media nightmare.

I don't know why anyone worries about World Series TV ratings. It's not like this is a struggling sitcom. If the TV ratings are low, it's not as if baseball will be canceled.

The World Series is a big part of MLB's national TV deal, as well as a barometer for the national popularity of the game on TV.

This national TV money is split evenly between the teams.

If MLB earns less from its national TV deals because the World Series has plummeting ratings, each team gets paid less from MLB and the disparities between teams' local revenues are exacerbated.

Meaning the economic prowess of big market clubs relative to the rest of the league is enhanced.

Fox Sports or ESPN or TBS or whoever cares a lot. It colors their coverage throughout the season as well. It even colors their commentary during games. For instance, with the Rays ahead 7-0 last night, what were they discussing? "How will the Red Sox retool for 2009?"

I would bet good money that the sorrows of the Yankees created a lot more coverage than the triumph of the Rays this season. Shouldn't they have had at least equal time?

These "journalists" need to dump the pretense and come clean. They are parasitic publicity arms of major market teams, they are not news organizations. Frankly, ESPN has more in common with E! than with CNN. What else explains their womanish, gossipy fascination with things like Manny's knees and Clemens' ass?

That's not the reason.

ESPN is a business. Newspapers and magazines are businesses. They talk about the Sox and Yanks more than other teams because they are VASTLY more popular than other teams. That's what people want to see. They cover teams in proportion to the attention they draw.

ESPN knows that having A-Rod or Jeter on the front of their website gets more hits than having Prince Fielder or Evan Longoria there. The NY Post knows that when the Yanks are on the back page, they sell more papers than when the Mets are there. Any national organization like ESPN would be stupid to stop giving disproportionate play to the most popular teams.

In short, they do what they do because that's what sells.

Exactly! Why people don't seem to understand this is beyond me. I guess it gives people more to complain about. We don't have to like it, but a fact is a fact.
