“We’ve got to start playing better defense"

Statcast has Galvis as 33 OAA from 2015-20 with Iglesias at 22 during the same time period, so I dont think the O's are losing anything defensively unless some age regression happens. Statcast is saying Galvis was the better defender.  I think the O's look like they'll be a above average defensive team this year. Probably no GG winners, but solid. Mountcastle and Cisco /Severino are the only real question marks.

You conveniently left off last year's numbers. Now maybe Galvis struggled for a reason last year defensively, but he was not good according to statcast while Iglesias was excellent.

Hopefully it was the weight gain that was mentioned, although I’m not sure we have heard anymore about that?

As long as I have been following the Orioles, the focus has been on a fence at the expense of defense, regardless of what anybody said. The fact that we had Sterling Defense for a few years was apparently luck more than anything else.

any team with a lineup that includes Valencia, Trumbo, Alvarez, and a couple other names that escape me at the moment, doesn’t care about D.

This is wrong.  You can’t and won’t have great defenders at every position and even if you did, your offense would likely suck to the point where great defense wouldn’t matter.

But you’ve got to have SOME guys who are good. Manny was magic. Everyone else was average or worse by about:2016, and nothing has improved. And the guys I mentioned were poster boys for bad D, although Valencia was an ok 1B, and Trumbo would have been as well, but some fool decided he was an outfielder

They did have some guys.  The defenses were very good in the 2012-2014 years.

2016 team wasn’t as good but they still made the playoffs, so I’m not sure why you feel the need to bring that up as if it was some failure on their part?

That fool was Mike Scioscia. Trumbo started 96 games in the outfield in 2012 after the Angels signed Pujols. He continued to play outfield primarily for the 2014 & 2015 Dbacks and the 2015 Mariners. He was an embarrassment out there, for sure, but it's not like the Orioles were the first fools to play him in the grass.

The 2012-14 teams had great defense. The 2016 team barely squeaked into the playoffs as the second wildcard(iirc) a single additional win and they would’ve been the first wildcard, but the defense was terrible and getting worse. 2017 didn’t happen without some long term blindness, And ignoring defense was a large part of that.

Oh I never said the Orioles were the first, he had some definite “web gems” as a diamondback, But that just makes it all the more inexplicable why Buck and Dan thought he was a competent outfielder

Lack of talent was the reason for that.

I just looked at the box score for tonights game against the Pirates.  5 errors, wtf?

Watch the game tomorrow morning on replay.  You won’t regret it.

The 5 errors do not tell the whole story.

It was much worse.

Yep,  great circle routes to fly balls. Throwing the ball around the field like little leaguers.  The wind was howling so some of the fly balls were an adventure but still.  BTW the Pirates had 4 errors so what ever was going on was contagious

    • That would be pretty cool. Just do me a favor and please don't start the magic number thread in June next season.
    • There’s another accomplishment from 1983 I’d like to match.
    • I'm more of a Prime Number guy, I'm happy enough with 89. Round numbers are for suckers.   Pretty disheartening they haven't managed to reach that relatively meager goal in 40 years.
    • Still with a chance to do this for the first time since 1982-83. Would be one more nice accomplishment for this organization.
    • The weird thing about our bullpen is that they rarely blow leads.   They have a 69% save rate, 4th highest in baseball.  They make it scary, but generally, when they have the lead, they get the job done.   Where they are really bad is keeping games close when we’re down a run or two, last night being a classic example of that.   This year’s team has 32 comeback wins, compared to 48 last year.   Why is that?   Part of it is obviously on the offense, but part of it is that the bullpen doesn’t keep us in striking distance when we’re behind.   One way you can tell this is by the W/L records of the starters and the bullpen.  Last year, the starters were 57-40, this year they’re 60-49.   The starter got the decision 12 more times this year than last year, including 9 more losses (with 3 games to play).   That tells you that when the team is losing when the starter is pulled, they keep losing.  Meanwhile, the relievers were 44-21 last year, 28-22 now. They’re not picking up wins because they don’t give the offense a chance to catch up and get the win for the bullpen guy.
    • I do not disagree with above posts.  Also I am pretty sure that this time last season, the Texas Rangers Hangout was saying the exact same things as the Rangers Pen.  Point being, you never know until you know.  The pen is shaky, but is capable of putting together a solid run from time to time.
