I knew this day was coming, and I've been dreading it.

In my own personal Orioles pantheon, Nick ranks very near the top.   He's not one of the ten greatest Orioles, but he's easily one of my top ten favorites; in fact, top five.

Why?    Because he came along in the Orioles' darkest hour, and gave us a ray of hope.   Because he was a lunch pail guy who showed up every day.   Because he gave you a good at bat every single time.    Because was one of those guys who just fit with the city of Baltimore.   Because he never sought to draw attention to himself.    

My enduring image of Nick will always be the day that the O's clinched the 2014 AL East title, Nick just standing there quietly soaking it in,  his eyes glistening.    He didn't need to say anything, the look on his face said it all.

I look forward to the day Nick is inducted into the Orioles Hall of Fame.   Wild horses couldn't keep me away.    In the meantime, I hope he enjoys his retirement.

This day was always going to come eventually but im happy for Nick. He isnt staying too long, trying to hang on. He's leaving on his terms after collecting almost 2400 hits.

This isn't a guy that bounced around from team to team playing out the string.  He had a nice second career in Atlanta.  Why shouldn't he just retire as a Brave?

I think it would be a bit of a shot at the Braves if, after six seasons there, he signed a one day deal with another team.

By all means put him in the O's HoF and give him that day.

Glad you are doing it your way. Mr. Class.  The young ones coming up need to use you as an example to give 100% at every at bat.  A few were blessed with more talent, but none with more character.

Honestly, I agree with this.   He played a good long time with Atlanta.   In fact, he turned down more money to re-sign with Atlanta because his kids wanted him to stay there.    I suspect one of the reasons he retired was that he wasn’t going to either be away from his family or move them just to chase another couple million dollars and another few hits.  Nice to see that kind of perspective from him.

He will always be known as an Oriole imo. His best years were here.  
 

Now, if he doesn’t want to retire as an Oriole, that’s fine.  But if it’s something he wants, I’m good with the ceremonial gesture.
