Absolutely.    That staff had by far the best performance of any Orioles team this century.  And yes, they were incredibly healthy.   People talk about losing Wieters and Manny, and then Davis when he tested positive for adderall, but on the pitching front they had an almost seamless year, except for Ubaldo “stepping in a pothole.”

Plutko entered the game with runners on 1st and 2nd base, 2 outs, and the Orioles desperately clinging to a 1-run lead ...... he got the team out of the jam by retiring Xander Bogaerts to end the inning, and wound up throwing 2.33 shutout innings overall. 71% of the outs that he recorded (5 out of 7) came via the Strikeout and the Groundout.

Yes exactly. If he keeps doing what he did today I will be overjoyed. But if he gives us 70 innings of 3 ERA ball I will be equally pleased.

It was a smooth, reasonably efficient debut (33 pitches and his record shows the strike/balls ratio should improve), and Dillon Tate's 3-up, 3-down inning even moreso: 11 pitches, 9 strikes.

If he can be a sub 4 ERA pitcher, it will be a huge success.

(vs. YANKEES, 4/06)

 

Plutko entered the game with the bases loaded, 0 outs, the Orioles trailing by a score of 1-0, and the the Yankee batters primed to completely blitz the Orioles out of the stadium ...... he did a reasonably good job, considering the situation that he inherited. He immediately induced a double-play groundout which ceded one run, and then gave up an RBI-single to make it 3-0 Yankees before getting the 3rd out of the inning. He pitched an addition 2 shutout innings to help spare the rest of the Oriole bullpen from an inordinate workload, which simultaneously kept the Orioles within striking range of getting themselves back into the game.

So far this looks to be a savvy pickup for a team that needs a guy just like Plutko in the bullpen. I'm glad it's not just LeBlanc filling that role. Elias saw he could do better and made the move for an established ML swing guy for straight cash. I hope they resist the temptation to put him in the rotation where he will be far less valuable. 

Eventually I'd like to see:

Lopez to the 'pen
Akin to the rotation
LeBlanc DFA
Lakins/Lowther up for the bullpen

I lack your faith or interest in Akin.  At this point, I'd rather see any of Baumann, Lowther or Wells in the rotation (allow neither Baumann nor Lowther have yet to be given a clean bill of health).

No argument there really. I'm not high on Akin either, but I'd still like to give him another shot. Gonna be awhile though since AAA games don't start until May. Ultimately, feel free to replace Akin with your young starter of choice.

It’s going to be real hard not to put him in the rotation.  He looks good. It’s him vs Lopez now. If an injury happens Plutko is definitely in the rotation.
