As good as Mateo is defensively, and I thought it odd they,  PH Mountcastle, with 2 out no one on, for some reason I like Hendersons bazooka and determination over Mateo on that last play.

I’d be pretty happy with either there.  I thought it was odd to pinch hit fur Mateo with 2 out, bases employ and a 1-run lead.  But, Gunnar’s defense has been superb of late at both spots.

I'm not sure if Hyde or Elias is setting the lineups, but man oh man choosing to start Mateo at SS and then watching him botch a ground ball that was hit directly at him (to allow the tying run) was absolutely brutal. Especially after seeing Fujinami battle back from some clear nerves to almost get out of the inning. It feels like we're almost to the point where Mateo should nothing more than a pinch runner.

Remember when a handful of you all adamantly argued that the Orioles were better off with Mateo in the field than Henderson? Those were fun times / takes.

This wasn’t just OH posters saying things. Fielding Bible recognized him as an elite, best-in-the-league defender last season.

Not really a second guess because I got greedy going into the 6th and agreed with Hyde at the time. But… before the game (and more in advance of last) suggested Irvin could piggyback Grayson. Let him be a 5-and-dive guy in the short run to really stack some success at the ML level. I would have felt good with Irvin having a 5-run lead to go 3 or 4 innings.

I think that could make sense with Wells starting today. Irvin is rested and remainder of bullpen could use a break/reset headed into next week.

That ball was 113mph and took a artificial turf hop that almost tore his head off.

What makes it so clear that it was nerves?

Just my take from watching it live. I also probably had the comments he made about pitching on a bigger stage / in front of more people in the back of my mind. He also hadn't walked a batter in over a month before this outing.

Tampa has a dirt infield...the ball never hit the turf...and it didn't take a bad hop. He just botched it. For someone pegged as a defensive specialist it was a very catchable ball. McDonald and Brown said the exact same thing during the broadcast. It was a play he should have made.

Mateo also botched a slow one hopper with a slow release and weak throw to first that Siri turned into an infield hit.

Any AB's or defensive innings given to Mateo would be better given to Ortiz.

He was 5/13 career vs McClanahan and had a 2-run double

Understood, but my take early on was that any drop off defensively (from Mateo to Henderson) would be negligible when you took into account the bat upgrade. I was also worried that playing Henderson so often at DH would hinder his defensive development. We all knew he was much more of a franchise building block going into the season than Mateo and I wanted the team put him in a position to succeed. It's nice to see he's overcome those obstacles, even with the team still bouncing him back and forth between 3B and SS. I'd still like to see him eventually settle into primarily playing one of those positions.

I thought he had nerves too.  Taking very deep breaths between pitches, and just looked a little fidgety.  Plus he admitted he’d been nervous in his previous appearance.

This, and I don't see anyone could make a sound argument against that approach unless they're just being being contrarian or arguing for the sake of arguing. I appreciate the season Mateo had in 2022 and his offensive contributions during he first month of this season, but the team and the players have evolved and it's time to move on.
