And he made a key mistake that led to the tying run scoring. You left that part out.

This is hilarious. Guy who walks 2 guys on about 9 pitches and advances that runner to a position to score on an extremely wild pitch, and allows 113 mph rocket excused due to nerves.

Guy who is responsible for the team having a 5-0 lead instead of a 2-0 lead and misplays a 113 mph ball, allowing one of those free runners to score, was the problem.

Tampa has a dirt infield...the ball never hit the turf...and it didn't take a bad hop. He just botched it. For someone pegged as a defensive specialist it was a very catchable ball. McDonald and Brown said the exact same thing during the broadcast. It was a play he should have made.

.410 xBA per Statcast. It was hard hit with a short hop. Not an error but should have had it.

I thought he had nerves too.  Taking very deep breaths between pitches, and just looked a little fidgety.  Plus he admitted he’d been nervous in his previous appearance.

How could you not be nervous being brought into a high leverage spot in your second game on a new team? Whether the nerves contributed to his wildness or if that's just part of his game is unknowable.

I'm not sure if Hyde or Elias is setting the lineups, but man oh man choosing to start Mateo at SS and then watching him botch a ground ball that was hit directly at him (to allow the tying run) was absolutely brutal. Especially after seeing Fujinami battle back from some clear nerves to almost get out of the inning. It feels like we're almost to the point where Mateo should nothing more than a pinch runner.

Remember when a handful of you all adamantly argued that the Orioles were better off with Mateo in the field than Henderson? Those were fun times / takes.

For someone with a handle that is based on “no worries” …

Not really a second guess because I got greedy going into the 6th and agreed with Hyde at the time. But… before the game (and more in advance of last) suggested Irvin could piggyback Grayson. Let him be a 5-and-dive guy in the short run to really stack some success at the ML level. I would have felt good with Irvin having a 5-run lead to go 3 or 4 innings.

I think that could make sense with Wells starting today. Irvin is rested and remainder of bullpen could use a break/reset headed into next week.

If the O's somehow weren't able to take the lead in the 9th, Irvin probably would have gotten the call in extras.

The ball Mateo didn’t field cleanly had an exit velocity of 79.9.

It was off the end of the bat some and came in with some spin on it.

Where is the 113mph coming from ?

My guess is Mateo is being affected by his new role. I’m sure his confidence level is down.

Or maybe he just had a misplay. It happens. It came off the bat a bit odd.

Playing less makes any mistake stand out.

I agree that it’s hard to know exactly what happened in any isolated scenario, but it’s not like it’s the first time the guy has ever taken to the mound before.

He had a BB/9 rate over 4 for his career in Japan. And even just including his relief stints, it’s 5.4 BB/9 in MLB. He’s also hit 5 batters and thrown 5 wild pitches in just 51 innings. Wildness is part of his game.

When Fujinami came into the game, I was so angry that I took the dogs for a walk without my phone. The entire walk, I convinced myself that when I got home, the Orioles would be losing 7-5. Was surprised it was only tied. This was a bad move. Use Baumann, Perez, Irvin, ANYONE……but a guy who is in his 3rd day with the team and hasn’t been very good.

Did you not see him pitch the previous day or were you also walking your dogs? He gave up a HR on a 100 mph FB that hit the outside corner and otherwise was lights out hitting 101 with a 94 splitter.

Hyde said he had a “short ‘pen” in the post game yesterday so why did he pull Gibson at 92 pitches when he was pitching well? He could have given Fuji the last two innings and given Cano another night off and perhaps we win.

This is my main complaint about Hyde as a manager. Way too often he pulls starters too early. It’s a big reason why our pen is always overworked.
