The second guessing Hyde thread.

What is indefensible is Elias not getting an actual veteran bullpen guy at the deadline.  It is clear to everyone the middle of the bullpen has been an issue all year even as good as we are playing.  The other guys not named Cano and Bautista have been bad.  We should have been able to get at least 1 good bullpen guy and not be counting on a rookie with little experience at major league level.

Having Webb and Fuji rather than Baumann and Perez was surprising. Seems like Hyde is testing the whole series like spring training with Mateo getting CF practice and Cano throwing 70% sliders. Really weird stuff these last two games.

Fuji already got 2 outs (one on a HR robbery by Hays) before the 2 walks.   So, no 3 batter issue.  

Perez did pitch, in the 7th inning.

The organizational strategy is to limit guys to about 20 pitches per outing they have done it all year.  You can disagree with it but that has been their strategy all year and we have one of best records in baseball.

This is what I feared not adding an impact reliever at the deadline. It’s one thing to beat up the Mets the Astros are an entirely different kind of beast.

Maybe Wells can be that guy to compliment Cano and Bautista. You can’t trust anyone else from this bullpen during high leverage situations, Cionel Perez and Baumann have their ups, but they also have their downs.

Webb (even though he was good tonight) and Fujinami are unknown quantities.

Might have to start a 2nd guessing Elias thread.  August when your team has the divisional lead is not the time to be trying reclamation projects in the bullpen.

Mets are a dead team walking after the trades they made. Norfolk’s lineup probably would have given Fujinami a harder time.

I don't think one pitcher would fix this bullpen. This was a bullpen built on the cheap. You get what you pay for.

Not sure the big bucks align with bullpen results--probably the least predictable/reliable costs on the team, year to year.

When you are allowed to add only a couple million dollars in payroll at the deadline you're not going to get much.

 

I'll be glad when Fuji is on another team next year. He seems like a good guy but when you have an 8.00 ERA in late July, you've earned that.

I've had issues with the bullpen management many times this season.  That said, who do really trust out there?  Even Bautista scares the hell out of me half the time.  With the small pitch count approach, you need 2-4 of these guys to be effective every night.  That has worked more than not but when one of them struggles we're screwed, especially with so many close games.  Hyde can only use the guys he has.  Not his fault Tate, Givens, Chapman, Bednar and so many others are somewhere else.
