Adley Rutschman 2021

Whenever I get excited about Adley I remember Wieters' numbers at an even younger age at AA and I get a bit sad.

 

Honestly, has any big prospect ever so dominated AA at 22 only to become such a mediocre hitter? I want to feel, and seem to feel, that Wieters is a huge exception.

Here's the nuance I can put on the 2-for-5 with a walk, caught stealing, and a passed ball being at the yard last night.

PA1 v. RH SP - single to LF, waiting on a breaking ball and hitting it over SS's head with left handed easy swing

PA2 v. SP - walk.    The Caught Stealing ensued when he was going two outs, full count, and the batter whiffed.   Not really a true SB attempt.

PA3 v. Arias - LHP with low arm slot called on fresh to face Adley hitting 3rd third time through order.   Fresh lefty with funk, Rutschman 1st PA batting right-handed, that was the first strikeout.

PA4 v. Alvarez - Manuel Alvarez was t100, and in his warmup sent at least three pitches to the backstop.   Cleveland had him up at AAA earlier this year and he had a 16.20 ERA walking 14 in 6.2 innings.   It was basically DL Hall just don't swing type stuff from a RHP Armando Benitez type.    The fly out to LF was a well-hit ball caught at the base of the wall, probably just a couple clicks from being an opposite field HR.

PA5 - single past 2B was a groundball with eyes as Bowie equalized to 7-7 in bottom of 10th

PA6 - struck out with bases loaded bottom 11th after two walks loaded bases with Ghost Runner.   Dorrian picked him up with single for 9-9 tie restoration bottom of 11th, and clinching that my child would cry as fireworks vanished with curfew.

Baysox pinch hit for catcher late, so Adley slid to catcher for 11th and 12th inning.   Akron's 8-run Top of the 12th, the Baysox actually got two outs before even the Ghost Runner got in.   Ghost Runner had moved up to third on a Sac Fly.   

With two outs still at 9-9, unfortunately the Passed Ball let the go ahead run in, and then the floodgates opened.

Probably a bad taste in his mouth after 1100 last night despite the 400/500/400 and a loud out line on the day, to go along with maybe the regular Sunday Superman cape.

June 1-6: 28 PA, .292/.393/.625, 2 HR, 2 RBI

June 8-13: 30 PA, .296/.333/.519, 2 HR, 5 RBI.

June 15-20: 27 PA, .286/.444/.286, O HR, 1 RBI

First week without a homer this year and first Sunday without a homer since the first week of the season.   All singles last week - boring!

And 300 is an arbitrary number.

And 287 over the course of those 150 abs isn't negligibly distinct from 300.

But I think a player who puts up a 300/400/500 line at AA is likely to be a better ML hitter than one who puts up a 250/400/500 line, all other things being considered equal.

All things being equal otherwise, the batter with the higher BA will help the team score more runs overall.

It was a pleasure seeing him in person.  Showed a clear command of the zone and hit the ball with authority every AB i saw.

We might be waiting a news cycle to promote Adley to AAA after Wander Franco got promoted to the show. Always a good thing to get some positive press.
