Can't verify this but someone that claims to know Tex's family says he will never sign with the Orioles as long as Angelos owns the team! Take it for what it's worth.

Hmm, that doesn't make much sense because Peter Angelos wants to make him very very rich. And the owner has little involvement with the day to day operations...

Unless Angelos personally insulted the guy's family somehow, I don't see why Tex would care who owns the team...

Virtually zero chance (as it should be, but that's a different argument).

The "he's local" angle means nada to to him. As someone else stated, he can have as many homes as he wants, including 10 in the Inner Harbor, if the mood strikes. The current state of the team also means nada.

Isn't he a Scott Boras client? He will go to the top bidder, and nobody else. He would sign with a team from the Arizona Instructional League of they offer the most cash.

We won't be the top bidder, and he won't end up in Ball'mer.

As a lifelong O's fan, I'm glad. He's a good player, but nothing more — certainly not worth the megabucks he'll get from someone. The people who act like he's the next Eddie Murray are delusional.

And you know this because?

Have you seen his stats? He's got a lifetime OPS+ of 134 and has put up an OPS+ of 150 and 151 the past two seasons, that's pretty Murray like. Tex isn't just a good player, he's one of the best first basemen in baseball today, probably second to only Pujols and the best in the AL.

This article from the Boston Globe gives some info on the competition:

Agent Scott Boras declined to confirm that the Sox were one of six teams who immediately contacted him after free agent first baseman Mark Teixeira formally filed, but the Sox are expected to make Teixeira one of their primary targets.

So six teams are after Tex.

Angels, Red Sox, Yankees, Orioles, Giants and one other?

Maybe it's two teams. The Angels wouldn't need to contact Boras. Of course six could be a number Boras made up on the spur of the moment.

The Nationals are going to be after Tex as well as Dunn, Fielder and Holliday. Interesting. My bet is they are the 6th team.

But it does seem like Dunn is their primary target because of Bowden's connection to Dunn. I could see the Nats landing him.

Peter Angelos will not invest 160-200 million dollars in one player and not surround him with talent to win.

The Orioles already have Jones and Wieters and should retain Roberts and Markakis so Tex has already got a good core to be surrounded with in the next 4-5 years.

Tex is the final piece to the offense. The pitching will catch up in probably a year.

I hear where you're coming from...and agree to an extent...but I would disagree in saying that Tex is the final piece to the offense. The only reason I say that is b/c you're conclusion is based off a catcher with no ML experience, a 2B who you assume we'll sign long term, a RF who again, you assume we'll sign long term, and a black hole at 3B and SS. Now, I agree that what you assume will probably will happen. But you have to admit that it is just as likely that PA botch things up as it is he'll sign Tex then continue to fill our other holes and surround him with good talent.

Maybe I'm overly negative but history makes me think that I'm not entirely off-base.

Why would the Nats even think about going after Holliday? Can they even imagine him extending there? It worked out so brilliantly for them when they traded for a one year rental of Alfonso Soriano. :scratchchinhmm:

In the let's-find-those-meds for JTrea department ....

"Nick Cafardo, of The Boston Globe, reports the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim No. 1 priority in the offseason will be re-signing free-agent 1B Mark Teixeira."

Yea, it does appear that the Angels really want Tex back and that he is ahead of CC.

That's actually kind of surprising to me. I think CC should be a bigger priority for them since they may be losing Lackey soon....although they may be able to trade for Peavy and sign Tex since Peavy costs far less than CC.

Either way, I believe that the Angels and potentially the Giants and Mariners are much bigger obstacles than Boston and NY.

The Angels already have a 6yr./$120mil offer on the table. Boras wants 10 years. I think it comes down to the O's and Angels with Tex staying with the Angels.

    • Fantastic pickup by Elias and big kudos to O’Hearn for taking advantage of the resources to improve. He’s a great story.
    • Given his injury history and what’s happening right now, Means may make more money as an Oriole next year than as a free agent. He may have to settle for league minimum as a FA but would do better than that in arbitration. Heck, unless he’s effective at least a little this year then the orioles might release him after the season to avoid paying more than league minimum. I hope Means recovers, very much so, but this scenario is possible imo.    ps. I guess I ignored the part where you said if Means thinks he is healthy.
    • What I'd like to see in the next game Holliday plays, is for him to keep his eyes following through on the ball when he swings. In the last game I saw, he was yanking his head off the zone when he swung and couldn't see the bat to the ball. He was missing wildly and it wasn't even competitive. So, keep your eye on the ball! Follow all the way through! If your swing is so violent that it's yanking your head off the sight of the ball, then adjust your mechanics because you can't hit what you can't see!
    • What a great example of pedantic! Please tell us you meant to do that. I honestly can’t tell these days.
    • Well it certainly doesn't look like he'll be winning Rookie of Year award. And if we send him down for like the tiniest amount of time, we get him for another year, right? I think if this poor hitting continues it's financial mismanagement not to send him back down. Grayson got sent down and came back way better.
    • He certainly isn't a bust but I wasn't happy with the pick at the time and I don't love using the second overall pick for that type of player profile. Westburg signed for slot so he's irrelevant but Mayo was a great use of the money saved.
