MiLB hot and cold so far

Now that we have gotten over a week of Minor League Baseball, let’s take a look at who is having some hot (and not) SSS! Why? So we can discuss service time, bringing them up, ect! Just kidding! I think…

Now, obviously it is still early, but lets see how the farm is going! All stats are after todays games.

Hot Start:

Patrick Dorrain: The guy who left baseball for a bit, the “Player To Be Named Later” in the Yefry Ramirez trade, the guy that came out of nowhere. While Dorrian cooled off a little as he is down to a .333 average, the third baseman has a 1.420 OPS with 5 home runs and 14 rbis for the blazing Baysox. Throw in 4 doubles and he is doing good with the bat. His eye is also there, drawing 11 walks, but also has 8 strike outs. His biggest issue? Fielding. Right now, he sits at 3 errors. While he had a great week, nothing suggests he will keep this up. If he can, this will be a great story.

Terrin Vavra: Brought over in the Mychal Givens trade, Vavra is getting his reps in with the Baysox right now. A team leading .382 average, Vavra also has 2 home runs and 8 rbi’s, to go with a 1.210 OPS. 8 walks and 10 k’s, he is still getting used to AA after being in A and A+ before this season. He’s been a bit of a “swiss army” guy, playing games at 2^nd, shortstop, and centerfield, making his only error so far at short. There are high hopes for Vavra and so far, he is living up to the billing.

Kyle Braddish: Brought over in the Dylan Bundy trade, Braddish is in his first season of AA. Only 2 games so far, but he has gone 9.2 innings with 16 strike outs, a 0.93 WHIP (5 hits, 4 walks) and a 0.00 ERA. Yeah, he hasn’t allowed a run yet (sorry if he gets shelled next game now…) There is a lot to like right now, as he is getting atleast 1 K an inning on average and showing some great promise.

Kyle Brnovich: Another part of the Bundy trade, Brnovich is with Aberdeen and has gotten 10.1 innings with 11 strike outs and a staggering 0.19 WHIP. How? ZERO walks, only 2 hits with 1 being a home run. His ERA is at 0.84. Again, only 2 games in, but he is being effective and pounding the zone, something that pitchers can struggle with at the lower levels.

Joey Ortiz: A bit of a speedster, Ortiz is hitting .295, but has 3 doubles and 2 triples to go along with 3 stolen bases. Aggressive on the basepaths, Ortiz also knows how to get on with 6 walks. 11 strike outs stand out a bit, but he is like Mullins. When he gets on, he can make something happen out there. He has been around the field, playing at 2^nd, short and 3^rd, with 1 error so far. Can you argue with a utility style player with speed?

Stevie Wilkerson: While some people would be happy never seeing Stevie wearing orange and black again, Wilkerson is doing his best to make sure he sees Baltimore again and not just by being a fan. His .357 average leads the team (except Taylor Davis, who ¼ the at bats). Hitting lead off, Wilkerson has 2 doubles and 1 home run, with 6 walks and 12 k’s. He’s had 1 game at 2^nd while the rest are in the outfield, Wilkerson hasn’t faltered. With Urias being demoted and Ruiz still struggling, if Stevie can keep this going…

Konnor Wade: One of the very few bright spots of the Norfolk pitching staff, Wade has gotten in 2 games and has a 0.82 ERA in 11 innings with 8 strike outs and 4 walks. He has limited the damage that is done to him, which has been tough for that squad to do.

Gunnar Henderson: .341 average, 3 home runs, 3 stolen bases, 1.063 OPS. Whatever he ate in the off season, he needs to continue! He has added 5 walks but has 13 strike outs to his name so far. He has split his time between short and 3^rd, with 3 errors total so far. There will be some growing pains, but the bat is defintley going well.

Honorable Mentions: Adley Rutschman (started off slow, but is now getting into his groove), Austin Wynns (all he has done so far is get on base), Manny Barreda (0.00 ERA for Norfolk over 7 innings), Seth Mejias-Brean (bat is on fire, still needs some fielding work), Jordan Westburg (start buying his jersey!), Jordan Cannon (he really wants to back up Rutschman), Darell Hernaiz (batting order doesn’t matter), Adam Stauffer (only 4.2 innings, but 9 k’s so far and 0 walks, with a 0.00 ERA.)

Now onto the bad…

Alex Wells: The soft tossing lefty might still be battling back from his second oblique injury in as many years, as he isn’t doing the best. In two starts, he has only gone 5.2 innings and has a 14.29 ERA with 14 runs, 1 home run and only 4 strike outs. He has only walked 1 batter though, but has an ugly 2.65 WHIP right now. Hopefully he is only warming up and will show more in the next few starts.

Chris Shaw: Mr. “On” and “Mr. Off” when it comes to the 40, he is hitting a Chris Davis esque 0.000 in 16 at bats with 9 strike outs. The only upside? 7 walks. So while he isn’t flailing around, he isn’t getting the contact he wants and the balls to drop when he does hit them. Maybe he needs to get a hat for the bat?

Cody Sedlock: Oh, Mr. Sedlock…In 4.1 innings, he has given up 6 runs, 5 walks, and only 5 k’s. His current WHIP is 2.31 and he has trouble getting through anything. 103 pitches in under 5 innings? Not good…

Cadyn Grenier: Maybe he hears Henderson? Grenier is struggling with a .161 average and 13 strike outs to 4 walks. He isn’t seeing the ball well and is struggling.

Adam Hall: Like Grenier, he is struggling with a .139 average and 4 errors. Hall isn’t a power threat, but he needs to get things going or he will be passed soon.

I didn’t add him, but DL Hall is awful on his pitch count. 3 starts so far and has only gone 12 innings total, going only 2.2 today. But he has 209 pitches so far. Deep counts and trouble putting hitters away, he needs to take this number way down to be effective and last the whole season.

Did I miss anyone? Who has impressed you so far and who has been a disappointment? For the record, Delmarva is 9-3, Aberdeen is in the middle of a game, Bowie is 9-2 and Norfolk is 3-9.

@Legend_Of_Joey, this is awesome.  Thanks for putting this together.

Finally...FINALLY...the minors section is a place to really dive into and check out what prospects are doing good.  That's absolutely NOT to say that the powers that be who run the board are have done a bad job...far from it, the coverage, info and insight here has always been stellar.  It's just that there seem to be so many more exciting players to check in for updates on a daily/nightly basis.   The minors section, IMO, is now the most exciting place on the board.

If guys like Vavra, Bradish, Brnovich and Ortiz can continue to produce and make noise, our system has to be in the top 3 headed into next year.

Great job, LoJ!   I think Sunday night/Monday is a great time to take stock of our MiL system since Monday is an off day.

Just to complete the picture on the teams, Aberdeen is 8-4 despite taking it on the chin today.    So all the affiliates except Norfolk are playing very well.  

Worth noting, Bowie is hitting the snot out of the ball at 7.83 runs/game, tops in the AA Northeast (I hate the generic names of these leagues).   Delmarva is second in the Low-A East (ugh!) at 7.42 runs game.   Those teams are really raking.   Aberdeen has the second best ERA in the High A East (blech!) at 3.26.   

Johnny Rizer has only played 7 games for Aberdeen but has a 1.227 OPS.

As to DL Hall, his pitch counts in his first two games weren’t bad: 74 in 4.1 in his first start and 62 in 5.0 in the second.    He was dominant in both those outings.   Tough day yesterday but overall I’m excited about him.   Let’s see what happens next time out.

He's also on the 7-day IL. Perhaps the Chris Davis DL stint, not sure but he's a NP anyways. One of the more weird pickups by the Orioles.

Any word on the Vespi injury? he's been on the Bowie IL for a couplw weeks now.

I really want to update this soon. I held off due to the promotions, but now most players have been there atleast 2 weeks.

The team has been playing decently the last few weeks, after a miserable start.
