It’s the pitching, stupid (2021 edition)

How many failed as a starter throw him in the bullpen guys does a team need?

Can't you sum up all of modern pitching theory as "all pitchers get worse the more times through the order, so make all pitchers more effective* by using them more like relievers."

*More effective could also be phrased "less failed"

It’s interesting, Harvey was on a decent roll until the middle of a game three starts ago where he dropped a throw covering 1B and it led to a big inning.   Since that play, he’s looked like hot garbage.   I was never as high on him as a lot of people were back when he was having some middling success, but hopefully he can get his act together and return to his April form.

The hope for this season is that eventually someone from the group of Akin, Kremer, Zimmerman, and Lowther, starts to produce consistently good results. Heck, it might be time to give Tyler Wells a start.

The only way I see avoiding 100 losses is for this group of pitchers to start producing this season and start looking the part of being an MLB pitcher. Either that or the offense needs to become elite and that isn't happening.

Right now we're on a pace to "only" lose 98...

So we got that working for us!

Harvey has had two terrible starts in a row (doubling his ERA) but until then was looking at least solid. I'm willing to give him a pretty long leash in the absence of an alternative. Akin has yet to pitch his way onto the team, Lowther and Wells are not doing well in the minors. I'd be getting rid of Jorge before Harvey.

If the pitching can stabilize some the O's might be able to maintain losing games at that pace. I was hoping for 70-75 wins this year. Now, I'll be happy if they can avoid triple digit losses.

Lowther has been jerked around a lot though.

He may not be a ML starter but his ERA and what he has done in AAA early on this year has no effect on how I view him or how the organization should view him.

Harvey had plenty of warning signs before these last few starts.

I think Matt Harvey is mostly a PR campaign for better established MLB pitchers in the future, so I'm sure we'll be kind to him.   I would love to woo him with Closer so Valdez could pitch 5 innings a week on the regular in the middle of the game.

Past SP1 Means, I hope in a month we get to something like

Kremer/Zimmermann

Akin/Valdez

Lowther/Lopez

Baumann/Bradish

Hopefully by 4th of July none of those guys will have much to prove to minor league hitters, and put roster stress on AAAA guys.    None of them are young enough where dominating AAA hitters would be that exciting by now.   If Baumann shows ongoing health, I'd be wary of wasting bullets.

The rotation should be Means, Akin, Kremer, Zimmerman and Lowther.

The rotation should be five guys who pitch well.

I have no problem with roster churn. What idiot thinks it’s a bad idea? How else can you discover your best 25 guys?

“to every thing there is a season churn churn churn...”

find your best 25....then find better 25.and better...

We don’t have 5 guys pitching well.  You go with 5 guys who could represent something for you long term.

Lopez and Harvey don’t do that, at least not in the rotation.

Oh I don’t disagree with you at all. What I’m saying is use your five best guys now.

We don’t have five guys pitching well at OPACY So get rid of some of them and bring up other guys. If this season is about discovery well dammit, let’s discover. Lopez could be good, but Hyde keeps leaving him in too long. Start him but plan on ~60 pitches or twice through and then out. Harvey appears to have experienced his “dead cat bounce” and is now toast.
Akin is still a question mark so give him 10-12 starts, good or bad. Keep Kremer for now, good or bad. And so on.

I never understood why people were pushing this idea the young arms were going to make 30 starts this year. Made no sense. None of what we are seeing is a shock. It wasn’t going to be good just hoped it was more of a collective ERA around the high 4’s not high 5’s outside of Means.

Lasy year really hurt the arms we are seeing at AAA and big leagues now. Would of had much better idea what we had going into this season. Plus arms would have been built up more.

How bad things are now is not an indication the organization is a mess. I never counted on any of these arms anyway. I hoped maybe one would work out. Maybe Baumann still will.
