MLB Draft Orioles: CBS Orioles C Henry Davis MLB.com - “insert discount selection here”

5. Orioles: Kahlil Watson, SS, Wake Forest (N.C.) HS
The whole “insert discount selection here” buzz continues, but Watson’s strong season late in the spring has him very much in top 5 consideration.

Another year of not taking the BPA if they follow the MLB.com plan ☹️

He’s high school. Do we want another 18-year-old who won’t be ready for four or five years? Along with the risk that he grows out of the position? And becomes another… I don’t know another non-short stop.

Watson may be BPA whether you are drafting 5th or 1st.  He is someone scouts reportedly love.

At 5’ 9” I could see him moving to second.  If any of Westburg, Henderson, Ortiz, Hall, Hernaiz, Grenier, etc. work out at short, Watson will move anyway.  That’s why you draft shortstops.  They’re athletic and can usually pick up other positions.

Exactly and this upcoming trade deadline might bring back another 1-2 SS possibles.

I’m hoping they at least go for a more advanced player. High school players are nice and all but it’d be cool if whoever they pick has a chance at not being too terribly far behind the rest of the prospects we’re all hoping contribute to a competitive Orioles team.

1B (and DH, of course) are the possibilities that I've seen mentioned. I guess we could try to convert him to OF, though the recent experience along those lines is not so good.

This is an odd thread.  The title indicates the subject is Henry Davis, the content is all about Watson, and all of this discussion has already taken place in the Amateur Draft section.

CBS is mocking Davis to us l…MLB is Watson or whomever else will sign cheap

I’m confused by the title and post, but I would be happy with Davis or Watson. Watson may be small, but if you watch video on him, he has a really nice swing that I think will just get better. I don’t think either can be considered not taking the best player available because in my opinion only Meyer, Lawlar and Leiter should be ranked higher.

I believe Brian Robert’s and Altuvie are both that height.

I think Altuve is only about 5’5, but he’s an extreme exception. Until the trash cans he was one of my favorite players.

The title of this thread should be changed. It’s incredibly misleading. This basically says that the “discount pick” narrative is out there, but Watson is not one of those guys. And neither is Davis, so I’m not sure what the point is. Those are both top tier guys.

So two mocks don’t agree…it happens. That doesn’t mean that either is a “discount” pick.
