2021 5th round pick (137): Carlos Tavera - RHP - (Senior) Texas-Arlington

Recommended Posts

ProspectsLive had him as the 160th prospect with this to say, "Tavera has been up to 95 with a high spin breaking ball and a model release height. He's a three-pitch arm with starter projection and some velocity gains potentially ahead. Evaluators believe he could be a starter that sits 93-95 with an above average breaking ball and a usable changeup."

Gotta figure this is the O's perspective on him. I bet they love the spin and potential for unlocking velocity. Hope it's true.

Per Brad Ciolek: sits 92-94, touches 96, has feel for the slider and a plus changeup.    That’s a lot better than the OP suggested.   I’m liking this pick better, especially knowing how reluctant the O’s are to use high picks on pitchers.   They must really like him a lot.

I heard his stuff was legit for a 5th rounder so he was not just a 10K guy, Will being interesting to hear what he signed for with no leverage though.

The senior thing isn't just different because a lot of them would have been juniors with value last year. It's different because they can still choose to go back for another year if they want. None of this year's seniors are out of eligibility, are they? So they do have leverage just like history's juniors. That's my understanding.

Yeah, but at his age, if he went back, he would lose ever more leverage and sign for even less next year. Might as well and get started.
