Almost to the day of Tyler Glasnow's return, Shane Baz had TJ this week, a significant IMO setback for the 2023-24 Rays as entering this year he was one of the few pitching up and comers with scouting reports and dominant performances like Grayson Rodriguez.

There but for the grace of the baseball gods they all go.

Sciambi and Glanville on the ESPN telecast had that despite Shane McClanahan's lefty fastball averaging 96.7 mph, he threw the highest percentage of breaking balls of any qualified MLB SP this season.

Does anyone think Mike Zunino or Adley Rutschman or any catchers are calling mixes like that on intuition?

Really curious to see in an hour so if they straight hook him after twice through the order as the 3-game series dynamics start to play out.

It only occurred to me recently that in terms of core players, Shane McClanahan basically matched Gunnar Henderson in 2022 appreciation.   They are both what it looks when your late 1st round ~$2.5mm guy makes it big.

Otherwise, Wander world domination did not begin, Patino's entire year was a mess, and Baz is a recent TJ.     A year ago we basically had to concede Wander was better than Adley.    That still may be the case, but it feels closer now.

Now we begin the annual tradition of if Ji-Man and Yandy get cycled out as their Arb numbers climb.

As always they have eight elite prospects...Longenhagen's recent pegging of them was:

Curtis Mead, Taj Bradley, Shane Baz (out until 2024), Junior Caminero, Jonathan Aranda, Kyle Manzardo, Xavier Edwards, Heriberto Hernandez, Greg Jones

Entering the offseason, here is how the Baseball Trade Values folks guess the Median Surplus Value for the Best Five Guys - Orioles v. Rays

TB - Wander 160, McClanahan 145, Arozarena 60, Taj Bradley 45, Curtis Mead 45

BAL - Adley 140*, Gunnar 80, Grayson 50, Mullins 40, Holliday 40

For the decade-long, 2023 will show us if McClanahan can maintain the Cy-caliber level, and if Gunnar-Grayson can show the MLB results to earn that "proven Major Leaguer" appreciation.

Their current guesses say Elias would win by ~33% if he swapped our best three for their best three.

Just to close out the AL East's Teams with these kind of guys, TOR's best guys they have Manoah 135, Bichette 80, Moreno 65, Vlad 45, Kirk 40

*pending re-calculation if/when Years of Control remaining drops from 6 to 5.
