I think that the lack if good classes is on the coach, not the school.  I don't think a school can fall that fast from being a top tier HC destination unless there is some major scandal involved, or unless you can show me that a large number of schools that leapfrogged them have demonstrably been able to overcome the infrastructure gap (e.g. brand new facilities, etc.)  I would call Duke a top job even if both Scheyer amd the coach that follows him bombed and they weren't elite for 20 years, especially if they were still semi decent.  UNC was still a strong enough program to poach a coach from another blue blood after 5+ years of being mediocre.  It was only 2 years ago that they had a pretty good squad that had a chance to make some noise but for covid.

And considering a large percentage of p5 schools are Midwest football-first schools in podunk, I think that being in an urban area with a lot of basketball talent is a relevant advantage.

Yes, UNC did that.  MD isn’t half the program UNC is or even was back then.

And Maryland doesn't need its next coach to come at the expense of another blue blood. (And no one's about to tie bill self with the MD job.)  Maryland can at least make a serious run at the HC currently at any of the schools ranked from 15-40.  Its possible that some of those coaches will not take the Maryland job for various personal reasons.   But they'd all have more than token interest. I don't think you can say that about Iowa, TT, or even Alabama.

Maybe not but those programs have been as or more successful than MD the last 5ish years (at least TT and Iowa have)

Even if MD would be held in higher regards, which is very possible, they aren’t winning on the recruiting trail or on the court.

That is something the new coach has to overcome.

It was time.  I don't have much analysis, I am more of the type of fan who just enjoys watching the games.  It was clear Turgeon wasn't much of an in-game coach.  He had his moments, but his teams never seemed to respond well to him, particularly this year.  I liked the guy, he could just never get the job done, many March flops.  I do wish we had a chance to play with that Jalen Smith/Cowan/Wiggins 2019 team.  That was a pretty good team.

Maryland may not be a top 25 coaching destination anymore, but it isn't far behind.  Top 40 at the very least.  Large fan base, nice facilities, fertile recruiting ground.  I pray they find a good young coach who can bring some energy to the program.

Well, they weren't booing the team, they were booing Turg.  But what would you expect a "friend" to say?

It was long overdue.  He had a knack of enjoying the ride into the top 25 (when they made it) but then when the team couldn't keep up with the adjustments other teams were making to overcome the improvements, Turg's response was consistently to criticize the players not following the game plan or simply under-performing athletes.  The players had to love that coaching approach.  Good riddance.

The second I saw Turgeon dancing around like a school girl when they got the 5th seed i knew his standards were not very high. He had a much longer run then he should have had as a Maryland coach considering his lack of success in the Tourney or really, late in the year when his teams tended to fold up.

He should have been gone years ago, but alas, this MD regime is not exactly known for making the right decisions on coaching with their Football and Basketball teams.

All I know is that I've gone from a "don't miss a game" watcher to "not even sure when they ae playing and don't know 90% of the team" fan.

I watched this Sunday because the Ravens game was basically unwatchable.  At least we played well.

Which season are you talking about? 2018?  2016?  The 2019 late-season slide is on-brand for Turgeon, but it's pretty hard to let him go after COVID cancelled his best team's tourney, and then in 2020 he actually overachieved preseason expectations, again making it hard to let him go.

I'm usually pretty late to decide that it's time to can a coach, but I was totally on-board with this.  I know I've propagated the "Well, he's not bad... what if we end up with worse?" narrative in the past.  I just think he was in this super awkward space where he was just a little bit over his head, but he was doing just enough to not get fired.  But we finally caught him trending in the wrong direction, given this team's performance and the upcoming draft classes.

Good article here.

This is a really good article.  Thanks for sharing.  I will say that my hopes of Pitino or Pearl were hinged on Pitino wanting a bigger name school to close out his career, and Pearl not coaching his way into an monster extension.  That plus the fact that they were older and had flaws (NCAA violation history) made me think that they could be swayed to move to Maryland for a bit more money and prestige.

Count me as one of those guys who used to religiously watch MD basketball games and had so little interest in it recently that I didn't even know Turgeon had resigned.   Has Maryland played better since Turgeon resigned?  I know when Turgeon was signed, the thought was that his superior recruiting would make up for his mediocre coaching.  I guess that never happened.

I know Pitino has said he wouldn’t leave Iona but he’s the guy I’m going hard after if I’m Maryland.  He makes the most sense.

Yeah Pitino would be my guy. Just throw money at him and realistically that is your best shot at someone who can instantly turn this mess around.

To the guy above, Danny Manning is somehow a worse coach than Turgeon. Like, he's using the same rotation and doing nothing different. Wahab has zero game and they should be starting Reese. I DVR all these games and wind up fast forwarding because it's just unwatchable.

    • HEY YANKEES! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnxNRPy_SOA
    • Yeah I'm all for sportsmanship but seeing 'Congratulations Yankees' at or near the top of the board is sickening, not gonna lie.  There is no high road when it comes to these clowns.  Boone's constant whining, the well-documented HP ump favoritism (I don't care if its framing or whatever, its happening, and its annoying AF), the whining about Judge getting hit on the hand while their guys constantly pitch inside including of course the Kjerstad play where they were literally cutting up on the bench as he lay prone on home plate, the ginormous payroll, the incredibly entitled fan base booing at pitches being called balls that are three inches off the plate, that stupid roll call, that stupid whistle after strikeouts, the stupid national media drooling over a Judge v Ohtani WS possibility, Nestor Cortes and his dumb mustache, the mediocre stadium that is revered simply because its called Yankee Stadium, the ridiculously short RF porch, the Soto Shuffle or whatever the hell it is. Congratulations my ass.  Screw those dudes.
    • Here's the deal. I doubt anyone on the Yankee's board congradulated us last year. This year they won the East. Whippie for them. It's like saying the IRS won tax season. IF, we do anything in the playoffs, we may meet again. But there are some significant hurdles before that. And they could easily lose along the way. Cleveland, Houston, Detroit, and KC are no walk in the park. I'll root for the O's to go as far as they can and that the Yankees are one and done. We are in. I hope we win one more so we play the opening round in Oriole Park. If not, we are still in and have to do what we got to do to go anywhere. Two years in a row. While the Red Sox, Blue Jays, and Tampa sleep. Year two with a heck of a lot more obstacles. This may not be a WS year but we are competitive, young, and a hell of a lot classier than that bunch in the Bronx.
    • The usage of Cano last night was poor, I don't even blame him really.  Yankees had 9-1-2 coming up, and Torres is well known (based on the telecast) to hit Cano well, and hit sinkers well.  He laced that hit to RF off him on Tuesday where the Yanks screwed up the baserunning.  And Soto got a hit off him that same inning.  So it was pretty predictable that these guys were going to tee off when he came in, and that's exactly what happened. Not to mention he's pitched a lot recently, and Burnes should have pitched another inning anyway.  Just baffling decisions by Hyde last night, and I'm not one to generally question those types of things.  Even if the Burnes thing was pre-ordained, the choice of Cano for that moment was terrible.
    • Why is this thread on the Oriole Talk section.    It probably does not belong on the OriolesHangout  at all but if it stays it should be on the MLB section.
    • If there's two outs and its not Judge in the hole, I'm probably going with Perez, crossing my fingers he gets the lefty, and then starting fresh the next inning with Coulombe or someone else.  If there's one out, I'm going w/ Coulombe.
