I recall near time of the trade, there was article (fangraphs, pipeline?) which showed picture v picture of the mechanics where Rogers was not using legs as much now as 2021. Very encouraged to read this from Melewskis blog: “I have been doing Driveline this offseason (in Phoenix). The Orioles and Driveline, we’ve been in constant communication, just making sure we are all on the same page. We looked at the numbers and my lower body strength was far below average. So, it correlates with velocity. “To be honest I was happy to see that. If everything was right in the middle or average, we might have a bigger question. But knowing that was lacking and it contributed to my lower velocity, I was excited to know there is an answer. And I can work to attain the goal of getting stronger.” It was like a light bulb turning on moment for Rogers. The lower body weakness could be turned into more ticks on the radar gun. "Losing three to four miles per hour, it just never made sense to me until we looked at these numbers. And it now makes perfect sense," he said. -

In Steve's defense, I didn't take this as a puff piece. Generally ,Melewski is pretty fair, although this was certainly a more optimistic piece. That said, I do dig that we get to see behind the curtain about Driveline being incorporated, as we know it did help guys like Dillon Tate, and others. And that they do have a meaningful offseason plan. There were some decent details and quotes in there. We'll see. -

Oh, I know about back issues all too well. My family unfortunately has a history of them. I think the main worry I have about them specifically is that they generally do not go away in an offseason. He's had these for years, so the big question is: will he overdo it this offseason? Will the mechanical tweaks potentially exacerbate things? As you've said, he's still young. And there's a chance with the right offseason regimen and even regular season regimen, maybe he can get back to a better baseline. It just seems like a tall order in a very short offseason for him to be an effective weapon to start the season. Perhaps as the season goes on a la DL Hall? Who knows. Wishing him the best, though.
