O's sportswriters in Sarasota

Recommended Posts

So far it looks like these are the O's sportswriters in Sarasota for the opening of camp.

Nathan Ruiz for the Sun

Rich Dubroff of Baltimorebaseball.com

And who is not.  I see no indication that these guys are down there.  Correct me if I am wrong:

Roch, Steve Melewski, Dan Connolly, or Jon Meoli.

Anyone else?

Roch has some quotes from camp on his Twitter.  From Elias, Hyde, Mancini.    I'd be a little curious where he is getting those from if he isn't there in person.

Last year he stayed in Maryland during camp and did everything via zoom.   Of course last year the reporters weren't ALLOWED contact with the players and coaches.   That is no longer the case this year.

Roch's latest article on MASN has a byline of Sarasota.   Maybe he made it down there after all.

Yeah it's strange.  I'm used to seeing him make a bunch of cracks about waiting at the airport.......taking a flight...........worrying about what to put in his mini fridge in FL, heh.  I feel like if he was down there it would be hard for him to resist all of that other stuff.   I'm 50/50 at this point.

Roch said the other day that he hadn't gotten approval to go to Sarasota, so he said he was going there on his own from yesterday through this Wednesday.

Do you have a source for this?  was it a tweet?

This seems like a pretty big deal if MASN isn't paying their employees to cover spring training this year.   My respect for MASN would go down even further (and my respect for Roch would greatly increase) if we are sure this is true.

Roch is definitely there.  He is tweeting out pictures from the stadium today.

    • As someone else pointed out, he has always been a high strikeout guy and still found success, and plenty of hitters are very productive despite high strikeout numbers. I would also expect that to improve with experience, but even if this year is fully representative of the player he will be for us, that's still a very solid player. The 2024 AL rookie class is pretty weak though, I won't argue that.
    • Anything at the plate is a bonus. His defense alone warrants playing him right now.
    • If we can get hot from here on out, right through the playoffs, wouldn't that be a blessing and the unexpected.
    • I would expect it’s about easing him in (first game back in field).  They are going to be cautious with him coming back from a concussion.
    • 3 consecutive great starting pitcher games. Playoff performance level. The batshit a bit to a win, hopefully heating up for the next impressive run!
    • Hyde just said hopes Cano is back tomorrow. Soreness. Maybe that explains the 2 pitch outing. ….
    • Norby was hot for awhile but he's back to struggling the past couple weeks.  I think Cowser is who he is to an extent -- a very talented hitter who has always had high strikeout totals.  The league adjusted to his weaknesses and he's trying to adjust back, but it will probably take some time. Holliday just seems like he's not all there yet.  I think the expectations and hype machine messed with his head a bit, and now he's got to work his way back to finding his rhythm and his confidence.  He's only 20. Mayo hasn't had enough at bats. O'Hearn is simply not an every day player.  He's good when used as a role player. Adley is really the only one I'm concerned about at this point.  Some say they think he's playing hurt, but I'm not really buying it.  If he's playing hurt then why is he DHing at all when his bat is lifeless?  If he's hurt then send him down before he has to get sent down for forgetting how to hit.
