In Sept/Oct of 2021 Lyles apparently made some changes that allowed him to put up a 2.87 ERA in 31.1 IP.   Elias says his analytic guys picked up on that and his pitching coaches will try to get him to continue those changes.

Forward to 9:30.

If Lyles is this Sep/Oct pitcher, that will make the Orioles a much more formidable team, especially when Grayson and Hall get promoted.

Well, he's durable, but that reminds me of the joke about - We're losing money on each sale of widgets, but we're making up for that by increasing our sales volume.

I didn’t watch that part of the game, but following it, I can see what he brings to the table.  He wasn’t sharp and got knocked around in the early part, but still managed to get through 5 innings without letting the game get out of hand.   Later in the season, he probably goes out there for the 6th.   So if he’s a bit better than this in 45% of his starts, and worse in only 10%, he eats a lot of innings, doesn’t take you totally out of the game most of the time, and gives you a good chance to win in a decent chunk.  That does help the rest of the staff.   Pretty fresh bullpen for tomorrow.

Jordan Lyles, most of the time he'll get you through the fifth without being mathematically eliminated from the game.

The ultimate apologist response to today's outing.  Content with a losing effort.  What you are describing is not okay, and certainly not a $7 million for the year.

If you don’t think that’s worth 7m you haven’t been paying attention to the cost of pitching.

Orioles need to cover a certain number of innings this year, Lyle will do a bunch of them in a not totally embarrassing way (hopefully). That would be a big improvement from a lot of last years starts

Did I say I was content with today’s outing?   No, I didn’t.  But I’m a realist.   We can look at Lyles’ season last year and realistically that’s about what we can expect, if we’re lucky.   15 quality starts, 3 others where he went 6+ and gave up 4-5 runs, 5 others where he went 5+ and gave up 2-3 runs, 2 where he pitched 5+ but gave up 6, 6 games where he pitched under 5 innings and allowed more runs than IP, and one where he went 4.1 and allowed 3.   That’s probably a little better than what a described, to be honest.   As I see it, that mix is a lot better than what we got from any starter other than Means last year.   I no longer care if the O’s overpaid for him, which I said at the time that they did.   It’s water under the bridge.  I only care now that they get the pitcher they reasonably should have expected based on Lyles’ track record

I see Lyles has the O's #5 starter behind Means, Grayson, T Wells and Bradish.  He will give the team innings.   I think it was Palmer that said that the O's were going to let Lyles be Lyles today.   Let him pitch without making any changes from last year.   But he O's think they have found something to improve him.  Whether that happens or not is anyone's guess.

I saw a very hitable fastball today that range for 89-93 but has mostly 92.  They say he has 6 pitches but he did not seem to mix they well today.
