Both John Means and Jordan Lyles are scheduled to pitch in this game, yet another non-televised game.  It's being streamed on MLB.TV via 98 Rock, so at least they worked that out.

First batter Hill is credited with a strikeout, even though on a 1-2 count it sure sounded like the ball was fouled off.

Second batter Reyes flies out swinging on the first pitch.

Third batter Castro hits a single, line drive on a 2-2 count, they say Means went in on him but he was able to get a hit regardless.

Fourth batter Candelario on second pitch hits a double down the left field line, thrown to the cutoff man Urias who was slow to get the ball home, so Castro scored.

Fifth batter strikes out swinging after Means started off 2-0 to him.

Top of 2nd, first batter goes 2-2, fouls one off, then inside for 3-2, another foul ball, then Mancini makes a catch up against the netting for the first out.

They say Means is working a lot on his changeup in the spring, he says it's good sometimes and bad sometimes.

Harold Castro up, an 0-1 pitch hit to right field for a single.  (The Castro that scored in the first inning is Willi Castro)

Third batter Paredes goes 0-1, foul down RF line lands behind Chirinos foul 0-2, another foul into the netting down LF line still 0-2, curveball down and in 1-2, changeup low checked swing now 2-2, changeup called third strike over outside corner.

Third K of the game for Means.

Lopez takes inside strike 0-1, then lines it to Nevin in LF, Castro gets to third.

Men on the corners with 2 outs.

Top of the lineup Hill, first pitch hit to deep RF where McKenna makes the catch.

Detroit 1 Baltimore 0

Odor flies out on the first pitch of the bottom of the 2nd.

Nice play by Paredes off the pitcher's glove to get Urias out.

Another shot off the pitcher for an out, this time off his foot to the 3B.

Tigers 1 Orioles 0 after 2 innings.

Means third inning.

Reyes takes low 1-0, fouls one off 1-1, swing-and-miss 1-2, takes another low 2-2, foul to the left still 2-2, takes one high 3-2, another foul, finally Odor to Mancini for first out.

Melanie isn't calling the type of pitch, and only somewhat calling location.

Willi Castro out on the first pitch, fly ball to McKenna in RF.

First pitch strikes to all but 2 batters so far.

Candelario 1-1 hits a foul 1-2, then takes low 2-2, another foul to the right, then called third strike that Candelario feels is inside.

Could be it for Means. At least this was a relatively quiet inning.

Nevin gets on base by virtue of the high sky and perhaps communication issues by the Tigers infield.

McKenna reaches on a full-count walk.

Gutierrez on base via bobbled ball and high throw by Lopez (SS), allowing Nevin to come around to score.  McKenna to 2B.

"That, my friends, is a bad break." ~Melanie Newman

One out, Tigers 1 Orioles 1

Santander starts off 0-2, then works a full count with the bases loaded and 1 out.

The tension builds as he hits another one foul.

And then he swings and misses for the 2nd out of the inning which leads to a pitching change.  Miguel Diaz in to replace Tyler Alexander for Detroit.

Odor grounds out to SS to end the inning.

Will Odor make the starting lineup this year?

Mateo put on a pretty good show in Saturday's game, from what I could tell by the broadcast.  Odor hasn't done much.  So hard to say, right?

Lyles comes in for the top of the 4th.

Haase gets a line-drive, leadoff double down the LF line on a 1-2 count.

Melanie says he's cutting back on his curveball and increasing use of the slider.

Barnhart goes 1-1, then fouls one off 1-2, takes one outside 2-2, then flies out with a "Superman" catch by McKenna in RF.  Haase advances to 3B.

One out, man on third.

Does 98 online work for the games yet?

I'm listening to it on 98 Rock on the MLB app. I haven't tried it on their website. I'm in Harrisburg PA so can't listen over the airwaves...

    • Tipping pitches? On the bright side, he's got pretty good K/9 and low BB/9. Could be he is getting really, really, really bad luck on BABIP? Looks like the 4th blew up very quickly. Somehow he gave up 5 runs on 11 pitches.
    • What’s odd is that he walked 5 but he had a 67% str% and only threw 28 balls.  It’s not like he was wild and couldn’t find the plate. But that is back to back poor starts and certainly doesn’t put him on the road to Baltimore any time soon.
    • I don’t disagree, not entirely. He did not get many chances early in his career. But I don’t think he impressed enough either. He did move into the starter role in 2019, and then had a fly ball hit him in the head. He had other misplays and got himself injured. I think it was an ankle, a knee and something else. The guy had some chances along the way. 2021 was really the first time where he played a lot. 77 starts is a very good amount. My eyes cannot unsee his slow bat getting beaten over and over again by 90 MPH FB’s.  In those years, they had Adam Jones (2018), Mancini, Mountcastle, Santander, Hays, Mullins and McKenna. They also had immortals Dwight Smith Jr., Stevie Wilkerson, Keon Broxton, Jace Peterson, Renato Nunez (DH), Mason Williams, Joey Rickard, Mark Trumbo, etc…who they gave at bats to over Stewart. I think that tells us how they valued him.  They kept Stewart and the others and moved Yaz. I think Stewart was always at the mediocre side of those in the organization. He was kept around because he is a LH bat, with some above average raw power, who might figure it out. He didn’t. They evaluated him on a daily basis, in his preparation and such. I guess he could do a Yaz on us. Honestly, good for him. He’s not a good fit here. Maybe another team has room for a guy who can be an everyday mediocre DH. Not an AL East team. We cannot get our parties in a twist if a guy goes elsewhere and has decent results.
    • Yup, I was wondering the same. Sad to see him getting roughed up routinely.
    • I guess I'm just being nitpicky again because, to me, a seasons worth of at bats over five years isn't numerous chances with everyday play. I'm fine with moving on but he didn't get a multiple chances to just go out there every day thrive or struggle. And if you aren't trying to win games for years on end you should be doing that.
    • I can definitely make a case. The past two years, he had several extended chances where he played pretty much everyday, especially when Santander and Hays were injured. He showed no signs of improvement. Slow bat, and he has lost whatever moderate speed he once had. Mediocre fastballs mystified him.  In 2021, he started 65 games in the OF, and 12 at DH. .204/.324.374/.698 with 89 K’s in 318 plate appearances. He had the one 10 day period in 2020, where he hit 7 HR’s like Babe Ruth. That really skews his career stats.  Hyde stopped playing him, because he is awful. They were patient with him. They gave him every chance. He failed. He was not claimed by the other 29 teams. He is currently emergency insurance for OF. As you said, in five years, he had his shot. If he had been better, he would have gotten more opportunities earlier.
