In the scenario I outlined with Mancini also traded, Stowers would be in the outfield and Stewart would be the primary DH, so probably not a downgrade defensively.

I edited after your reply but before I saw it - not much different but figured I’d note.

I’m 100% on board with your scenario. I think there’s room then to figure out Stowers, Diaz, and Stewart, which is smart for the club going forward.

Orioles are finally turning the corner on being an above average defensive team, why would we waste a roster spot on an all time horrible defensive outfielder? Bad enough when Trey gets an occasional start.

You haven't watched much Orioles baseball if you think he counts as an all timer.

Please try to follow the discussion, he would be replacing Trey, not playing in the outfield with any regularity.

Also, he is not any worse than Trey in the outfield, almost certainly better, let alone an all time poor defensive player.

He was 1 out below average in 2020, per Baseball Savant, he is a below average outfielder, but he doesn't kill you out there.

As post trade deadline playing time goes, I think Vavra is to Santander as Stowers is to Mancini.

I don't imagine any other Club will value 2022 Odor higher than this one.

Vavra has only played 77 games above low-A ball. He is 25 so it is probably now or never, but he is being outplayed by Stewart at Norfolk.

That may be true, but we know what we have in Stewart, and it's not a pretty sight. I'd like to see Vavra and Stowers up for some extended playing time, and it doesn't even have to be at the same time.  I'm happy Stewart's having success in AAA, but I don't need to see him again.

Defensively not pretty but that can improve with regular playing time. His only long healthy stretch he played pretty well. I’m not sure we know what we have in Stewart yet. There were a lot of people quitting on oft-injured Hays too.

I care about who translates better at the ML level.  We could send Ryan "golden sombrero" McKenna  down and put up a .900 OPS in Norfolk. That doesn't make him our best starting OF option down there.

Did DJ get hurt today? Stowers moved from DH to RF and Stewart left the game.

That's a good guess. Even AAA managers don't like to lose the DH spot.

Stewart and Diaz must have the same personal trainer.

Might help the OBP but the power will take a hit.

I’m curious, why is it now or never for Vavra at age 25? You note that Stewart has been hitting well at Norfolk lately, and he is 28 years of age with no real defensive value. I will counter that McKenna hit even better than Stewart in AAA, and he can actually play an above average OF. I think Stewart’s numbers are more a function that it is an even bigger gap between AAA and MLB than in years past.

I hope Stewart goes elsewhere and has some kind of major league career. He has had many opportunities with the Orioles with everyday play. He just did not make it here. In my opinion, he’s a step back in every way. There is a reason that no other team took him off waivers.

I'm not arguing for Stewart getting another chance, frankly I'd rather see Diaz before he gets hurt again.

But I don't think you can make a case that he had "many opportunities...with everyday play.".

He's had 622 plate appearances over five seasons.

    • Still with a chance to do this for the first time since 1982-83. Would be one more nice accomplishment for this organization.
    • The weird thing about our bullpen is that they rarely blow leads.   They have a 69% save rate, 4th highest in baseball.  They make it scary, but generally, when they have the lead, they get the job done.   Where they are really bad is keeping games close when we’re down a run or two, last night being a classic example of that.   This year’s team has 32 comeback wins, compared to 48 last year.   Why is that?   Part of it is obviously on the offense, but part of it is that the bullpen doesn’t keep us in striking distance when we’re behind.   One way you can tell this is by the W/L records of the starters and the bullpen.  Last year, the starters were 57-40, this year they’re 60-49.   The starter got the decision 12 more times this year than last year, including 9 more losses (with 3 games to play).   That tells you that when the team is losing when the starter is pulled, they keep losing.  Meanwhile, the relievers were 44-21 last year, 28-22 now. They’re not picking up wins because they don’t give the offense a chance to catch up and get the win for the bullpen guy.
    • I do not disagree with above posts.  Also I am pretty sure that this time last season, the Texas Rangers Hangout was saying the exact same things as the Rangers Pen.  Point being, you never know until you know.  The pen is shaky, but is capable of putting together a solid run from time to time.
    • Roster Resource thinks it has tonight's lineup and Kjerstad on bench again. He is 7 AB shy of 130 MLB regular season AB with 3 games left, and if he ends up short some prospect list makers may still label him one.    If still with the Orioles, he will be 26 years old by Sarasota. I think the OP has its answer as it has been Cole and Lopez these two nights and the team is preparing for that intensity.
    • I care I bet the over on 88 wins, looked like a lock now not so much, come on O’s, daddy needs some new shoes
    • I’d have brought up Young immediately after DFAing Kimbrel. Baker has no place on this club this year. Would have been nice to see Young up here.
    • Yeah, but they could've brought him up a month ago and seen what they might have...And Im not "pining" for Brandon Young, just wondering if he's any better than some we have in the pen..
