What are the odds any of these three can beat out Mateo for SS? Not extremely high unless they show they have better hands and bat. Then they could take SS away from him. Mateo probably has better range then all of them.

In SSS data (last year and this with the Orioles), Mateo seems to move well towards the thirdbase line, but struggle on balls coming in. He was -OAA coming in on balls both last year and this year, this year he is neutral for the year on OAA, due to adding value going towards 3B

Rehabbing in extended spring training per this article, which also has updates on AR, DL Hall and Kjerstad.

Well, all happy talk from Matt Packer.   I guess that beats hearing that someone had a setback, though it does seem that Rutschman’s rehab is going slowly and it’s hard to tell what’s going on with Servideo.

Oh, no doubt they're doing the bare minimum re: information and any plans for these players.

I don't know which one eventually wins out but the odds of Mateo being our SS 2-3 years from now seems very low to me.

Thought this was an interesting article from Roch on the SS rotation at Bowie + Hall, and how the Orioles development team guides it with the manager

They basically want Ortiz, Westburg and Henderson to get two starts at SS per week. Interesting that they haven't yet determined who the best SS is yet.

Oh, I think they know who’s best defensively.  It’s Ortiz. They just don’t know whose bat will play.   And they’re hoping that Westburg and Henderson could be at least decent there if Ortiz doesn’t hit well enough to stick.

yeah, I think they know basically what they have defensively in Westburg and Ortiz, Ortiz is the better defender, but Westburg is playable there (but probably below avg at the ML level). Henderson is the wildcard, I think he has the arm strength but there are questions about his range long term, and he had a lot of errors last year.

Baysox Week3 outcomes:

Gunnar: 3B-3B-3B-SS-SS-3B     (three days in a row at 3B I believe first time anyone has done that so far)

Westburg: SS-SS-off-3B-3B-2B

Ortiz: off-2B-SS-2B-2B-SS

Adam Hall flexed in from the outfield grass a little bit.   Maybe he joins Vavra and Jahmai as a candidate for that Chris Taylor-Enrique Hernandez type job.

So, on the year so far:

Ortiz 8 games at 2B and 5 at SS

Westburg 4 games at 2B, 5 at 3B, 4 at SS

Henderson 9 games at 3B, 5 at SS

Henderson has 2 errors at SS, Ortiz 1, Westburg 0.   None of them have made an error at their other positions yet.

Yeah this sheds some light. They want them to play back-to-back games at SS, but basically no one is playing 3 in a row ever.

    • I wasn't one of them. All my coworkers said Jackson needed to be brought up here from Spring training. I was the only guy who said he wasn't ready. I'd like to think I know a bit about the game. The first game I saw in person, Jim Gentile was our first baseman. I'm old.  Obviously, Holliday is a work in progress. But he looks a bit lost in the field and at the plate. Sending him down while maybe hurting his ego, hopefully will help get him back on track. You simply can't keep playing him here when he's failing every day. I mean think about it. You or I could get up to bat and probably get a hit or two from sheer luck. That isn't what you want from a guy penciled in as your next superstar. I guarantee with more time at AAA perfecting his craft you'll see a different version of him when he gets a call up later this year
    • This thread is 3 pages.  Check it out. https://forum.orioleshangout.com/topic/50510-breaking-down-holliday’s-swing/
    • I sure hope you are right!!!! MASN is beyond mess.
    • 1.  Letting him walk.  This is the most likely scenario.  Replacing his 14M salary with someone making the minimum hardly seems to significantly impact extending Burns or even any of our young core, or sign a top FA pitcher.  They will or they won’t regardless of the savings. 2. Moving Santander in season seems unlikely but that could have some affect towards adding salary at the deadline.
    • He became the easiest Up/Down guy when Suarez was promoted, and I'll admit as the Melendez HR was flying out I thought his roster spot might get refreshed today. I don't know how yet, but I don't think they are going to have Grayson miss the Yankees series which he would as the rotation currently rests.    I figure we will hear soon if they accelerate him to tomorrow, but more likely they give him a little extra juice with a Povich game or bullpen game somewhere in the Oakland series.
    • Indeed. And he hit everything hard too, single at 96.1 EV, single at 106.7 EV, line out at 99.5 EV, grand slam at 103.4 EV.
    • Like i said the only thing I see is Povich
