Means to Have TJ surgery

Do you really think the O's will go to a 6 man rotation and limit the pen to 7 relievers. Bautista, Akin, Tate and Krehbiel all showed signs of overuse in September after Lopez was traded.

That really depends on what the team looks like in August. We do get the extra two guys for September. So maybe not a 6-man in August, maybe in September. But by the end of the year, the team will need to be careful with Means given he's coming back from injury, Rodriguez as he'll be well beyond (hopefully) the innings he's thrown in any other season...

This is weird to say after all these years but.... I have a lot of faith in the O's coaching staff to do the right thing with GRod. My underlying assumption is based on the player development and analytic staff reviewing the pitch data and his biomechanics.

Means is in camp.. Hope to do a half mound next week. 4-6 months after that should he able to pitch in a game, if no setbacks

So with no setbacks again 4-6 months after he starts the half mound this week. I would say that he is not ahead of schedule but not that far behind as of now

Means said Wednesday that he expects to advance from throwing off flat ground to throwing off a half-mound early next week, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.

Both Means and manager Brandon Hyde had implied earlier in spring training that the southpaw was on track to resume half-mound work by the end of February, but Means ended up staying in a holding pattern in his rehab program for Tommy John surgery a little longer than initially anticipated. With neither the pitcher nor team indicating Means suffered a setback, he should still have a chance to make it back from the injured list at some point in July. However, Means still has several markers to hit in his recovery from surgery before the Orioles offer a more precise target date for him to make his 2023 debut.

Obviously the details of their cases could be different, but TB Glasnow and BAL Means are both important pitchers for their teams.

Glasnow's procedure was 8.4.2021 and he pitched a minor league game for Durham on September 7th last year.

Means' procedure was 4.27.2022.    If he's ready for 1 minor league inning 13 months later, its Memorial Day.     Maybe June is 30, 40, 50, 60 pitch turns if we are lucky.

I'd like to know why a half-mound is preferable for 20 fastballs instead of a regular mound when it comes to the first pitches after TJ surgery but whatever.  He's on A mound and that's what matters.

Here's hoping he can get back to the pitcher he was.

The angle of the arm adds stress to the arm.  Flat ground equals minimal stress.  Half-mound adds stress but not as much as a full mound.

Maybe he should go to a 3/4 mound before moving up to the real thing?  🤣

They should have a variety of mounds just like a socket set.  1/2, 5/8, 3/4, etc.  I could hear Chris Holt saying, "Guys, we need the trusty 9/16 mound for this job today"

This is a common conception. There are a growing number of reserch that indicates that there is no significant differencee. I think that the program to return from TJ is firmly established and no one wants to be the first to change it. Here is one of the studies.  The results were published in the Orthopaedic Journal of Sports Medicine on December 10, 2020.
