Could Gutierrez be at risk of DFA on May 2? (Edit: DFA'd on 1 May)

The Orioles released Gutierrez from the organization yesterday.  He hit .242/.315/.384 with Norfolk this year.  I really liked his defense, and hoped he could build on his strong finish to 2021 offensively, but it didn’t happen.  At this point we are loaded in the infield so it’s for the best that he moves on.   The timing of the move strikes me as a little odd, coming two weeks before the end of the season.  Why not just let him play out the year?   Are we moving someone up from Bowie?

While the timing can be weird, it could be his choice.

Wow, I'm a little shocked his OPS was a hair under .700.  It seemed that he was frequently in the highlight reels in the MiLB recaps posted in the minor section.  He was playing a lot of 1B IRRC.  So maybe the org is shifting to have some legit prospects take more reps at 1B since the other IF positions are starting to be claimed by legit talent (as they should)?

Maybe a chance for him to catch on somewhere else ahead of the off-season too.

I said earlier in the year that with his bat, you can’t play him at the corners, so it’s a shame he isn’t able to play shortstop where you could justify keeping him on the club. But then Mateo became that guy.

I liked watching Gutierrez in the field, although Urias has looked equally good at third this year.

Should have tried him on the mound. That's still his best bet to get back to and stay in the majors in my opinion.
