Margin of victory/defeat

As of tonight, the O’s record stands at 18-27, exactly .400.   For the most part, though, the games have been competitive.  Here’s the number of games at each margin of victory or defeat:

-5+ 5

-4 4

-3 3

-2 7

-1 8

+1 6

+2 7

+3 1

+4 1

+5+ 3

So, we’ve been blown out by 5+ runs in 11% of our games.  Last year, we were blown out by 5+ 27% of the time.  Basically, last year we were blown out nearly twice a week; so far this year it’s once every week and a half.  That’s way more tolerable.  More than half our losses have been by 1-2 runs.   Those losses are disappointing but we’re pretty much in the game the whole time.  

Needless to say, our wins have been tight. 13 of 18 are by 1-2 runs.  In 10 of the 18, we had to erase a deficit to win. 

Overall, it’s just been a lot more competitive and fun to watch this team than it has been in a few years.

How does the eight one run losses compare to the rest of the league i wonder.  Seems high.

Jays, Mariners and Red Sox have seven, A's have eight.  In the NL Marlins has 14 and the Cubs have 11.

This club is definitely more competitive. I have probably watched at least as much so far this season as I did the whole 1st half of last season.

It's a lot harder to lose by 5+ when teams can't score 5 runs in a game anymore.

I know this was kind of a throwaway line, but it prompted me to investigate how often teams are scoring 5+ runs this year vs. last year.   The answer: 39.2% of the time this year, 44.0% of the time last year.  Significantly less often, but not nearly enough to explain the Orioles’ improvement in avoiding blowout losses.

With the exception of the Jays all weaker offenses.

Last year it seemed like we were always down 5 runs in the first inning
