Blowout losses

Was reading Fangraphs today and they listed every team’s record in blowouts (games decided by 5+ runs).   The O’s are 6-9.   Interestingly, 13 teams have more blowout losses than the O’s.  Three other teams are tied with the O’s at 9 (including the Astros, who have the second best record in the AL).  So, we are right in the middle of the pack there.     The Nats are the worst, having been blown out 20 times already.  The Yankees are the lowest, losing only 3 blowouts (one of which was against us at a game I attended!).

Six blowout wins is a low number.  That’s tied for 7th-fewest.   Detroit and Oakland are lowest, with three.   Not coincidentally, they have the two worst offenses in baseball.  The Twins and Dodgers have the most, with 15.

The fifteen total blowout games in which we’ve been involved is tied for 7th fewest.  Cleveland is the lowest, at 12, and the Nats are highest at 31.

Overall, one of the reasons this season has been more fun than the last several is that even when we lose, we aren’t blown out often.  Last year we were blown out 44 times, 27% of our games.   This year it’s been 14%, so half as often.   It was 20% in 2020, 35% in 2019, 22% in 2018.

The league-wide data for this year is in this article about the Tigers’ woes: https://blogs.fangraphs.com/an-historically-bad-offense-is-just-one-of-the-tigers-problems/
