2022 MLB Trading

Willie Calhoun-Steven Duggar becomes this year's first transaction where the player on both sides has a shot to be meaningful IMO.

Here is last year's log, as GM's again have to multi-task Draft and Trade season.    It isn't hard to imagine trades being somewhat rare until after the draft.

Last year the Blue Jays were the earliest movers, managing the June 29 rental of Corey Dickerson and Adam Cimber from the Marlins.

ATL's construction of an eventual World Series Champion OF unit went Joc on July 15, then all three of Soler, Duvall and Eddie Rosario on July 30.    I can't really remember anyone notable they gave up, except that they did pay two months of High Arb prices for guys with a lot of HR/RBI.

Waters is considered on some lists to be their best prospect, or at least in the top 3-4. Seems like an enormous haul for a #35.

Waters has been atrocious ever since getting to AAA and has fallen off every top 100 list I've seen. I actually think this a crazy move for KC. You're trading with a team that had three great OF prospects (Harris, Pache and Waters), the only one they've kept is looking to be an absolute stud, the other has been terrible in Oakland and now you have Waters who hasn't hit AAA pitching at all. You would think a team that still needs to be rebuilding would want to keep that pick as it's pretty valuable.

Drew Waters opportunity to follow the Jeff Francoeur life path, except I guess maybe without the Jim Traber style month in Atlanta.

I guess it is Kansas City selling future Wins for present Wins as a vote of confidence in Bobby Witt's roster core.

Acuna and Harris have 2/3rd of the OF spots on lock forever and Braves had fun mixing matching last OF and DH last year.

I don't think Drew Waters gets Witt's Supporting Cast quite where Adley's is, but he could help.

I suppose the Royals bingo card gets "Buy" in the great big game of Buying and Selling in the summer of 2022.    Let's see if they keep Whit Merrifield again.

It'll be interesting to see if the Lerners stick with Rizzo to the next good team.    To this day Brian Billick kind of remains my yardstick for How Bad Does It Have to Get? for an organization to move on from a leader that brought it a championship.

Early in the Stras-Harper years, a Mets fan at Nationals Park was trashtalking about Do you know how lucky you have to get? for the two years you bottom out to align with guys like that.    And they still had to put nine figures into Scherzer's bank account to save the nucleus.

Mets get Daniel Vogelbach from Pirates for some generic 27-year-old reliever who just made his MLB debut.

Vogelbach 12.17.1992 last offseason got a 1-year, $1 million dollar deal.    He has a 104 career OPS+, and his YTD 117 at age-29 is his career best excepting 67 great PA during the COVID-abbreviated 2020.

I guess he's kind of a DJ Stewart who kept his chin above water.

Does that preclude them from being interested in Trey anymore?

I doubt it.   Caretaker GM waiting for Stearns, Buck in his ear.

RosterResource thinks he's got the big side of DH platoon with JD Davis, but I'd guess he doesn't satisfy Buck like Mancini would.

    • Way too many black holes in the lineup right now. I saw  twitter post yesterday comparing the lineup from late June to one last night.  It’s night and day. So many big losses, underperforming guys and just players who shouldn’t be playing either at all or as much as they are. Its just a terrible combination right now.
    • 6-7. The problem is we are playing actual Major League teams the rest of the year.
    • Pitching hasn't been the issue. Other than say Povich, there are a lot of silver linings there. Hitting on the other hand, beyond Henderson, has been nightmarish and trying to find a silver lining is kind of challenging at the moment.
    • Feels like getting no hit for 26 outs against the mediocre Tigers (just after getting walked off to lose a series to the Sox) could be the "hitting bottom" moment of the season. Silver linings are badly needed.  Last night Adley had two CS's. I believe both throws were bouncers but had enough on them to beat the runners. When was the last time we had two CS's? Appears the Tigers think they have something on us and plan to run. See if that continues.  Overlooked in the Boston game, Kremer went 7 innings for the first time since April. That's 5 of 6 starts with 6 IP or more. I'm starting to feel more comfortable with him as the #3 if Grayson can't make it back (or even if he does).  Can we talk about how good Cano has been? 1.35 ERA in July, 2.31 in August. Always with the toughest matchups/highest leverage outs.  Eflin of course has been tremendous.  It's not a lot but it's something.
    • He is not the answer by himself, but along with Westburg and maybe Kjerstad, you'd be upgrading the bottom of the lineup who are all automatic outs to average or better hitters. We dominated the league with Gunnar plus a bunch of .750-.800 guys. Yes, we need at least a couple of Cowser, O'Hearn, Adley, and Santander to pick things up. But every bit helps and right now Urias we would be a massive upgrade over what we're getting from Holliday.
    • Question for all of you corporate types: If you owned this "company," what's your next step?  Perhaps even more importantly, what do you do in the off season?  Based on performance, the team is competitive. I think most pundits have the team as 99% likely to make the playoffs. However, I think the NYY are favored to win the division. by those same pundits. At the start of the season, the goal was to make the playoffs. Mission likely accomplished for the second year in a row. That's in spite of a vicious injury bug.  However, there is an old saying in business that if you are not improving, you are going backwards. This team does not appear to be improved from 2023. What do you do about that?  IMHO, this is a pivotal off season for the O's. Lots of important decisions to make. Plenty of salary flexibility. Many of the young star prospects have gotten their feet wet. It seems rather clear that the existing player assets are rather well defined.  It should be an interesting winter.
