21. Baltimore Orioles

Record: 39-44

Previous ranking: 21

It doesn't sound like much but Baltimore is only 6½ games out of a wild-card spot. Of course, half the league is ahead of them but the point is they are no longer a pushover. Manager Brandon Hyde has gotten the most out of a miniscule payroll while the team has done well picking up players from other teams, such as Jordan Lyles, who they signed this past offseason. After a rough start to his season, Lyles has gone deep into his past three outings, including a 6 1/3-inning, one-run performance against Minnesota over the weekend. -- Rogers

I know a lot of posters here seem to think the media hates the Orioles so it's nice to see something somewhat positive and the Orioles trending towards the top 2/3 of POWER RANKINGS!!!!!!!

Baseball fans see 6.5 back, Elias sees more opportunities to offload salaries.

It's a looooooong 6.5 back though. Most of the league is ahead of us so we'd have to outplay a bunch of different teams.

And honestly there's not much salary left to unload. Sure you save on arbitration by dealing Santander, but it's negligible. It's really about maximizing control years and making sure there's a path for your top prospects. Stowers projects as a better player than Santander in my mind. And Mancini, look, the objective is just to get this guy to a contender.

Considering 11 teams have a worse record than the O's do as of today (i.e. 19th out of 30 record-wise).  I suppose the gripe is still intact to some degree!  ;)  We were only slighted 2 spots!  Throw in the strength of schedule for kicks and I'm sure we could make an argument for another couple of spots.

Hence, our 0.3% playoff odds, per Fangraphs.  Let’s assume the last playoff spot goes to an 85-win team.   (As things stand today, 85 wins wouldn’t get you there.) For us to get to 85 wins, we’d need to go 46-33 (.582) the rest of the season.    That is extremely unlikely.   To get to 90 wins (which is closer to the actual likely cutoff), we’d have to go 51-28 (.646).   Not. Gonna.  Happen.

So, in summary, you're saying there is a chance. ;)

Honestly, I think having no pressure could make the second half fun.  Sorta like the 2011 end of year run where the O's got to play spoilers and set up 2012-2016 run.

Among many things that bum me out about the new playoff format is that there aren't tiebreaker games at the end of the season anymore. If, by some miracle, the Orioles had the same record as the Rays at the end of the year with a wild-card on the line, the spot would be determined by head-to-head record. (Currently that's the Rays thanks to their sweep in the first series of the year.) So the Orioles aren't *really* 6.5 behind the Rays or Jays or whoever. Just another way MLB doesn't care about the diehards who do goofy things like check the standings in July. As long as TBS gets their month of games, baybeee.

I like the new playoff format. If you lose to teams throughout the season and they own the tiebreaker over you that’s fine with me. I prefer the 3 game series instead of the 1 game wildcard playoff.

    • Of course, that $250,000 per year will be worth about $50,000 in today’s money in couple of decades.    I remember my dad telling me that when he was in law school (early 1950s) he and his friends agreed that if someone guaranteed them $10,000 a year for life, they’d be set.
    • Seems like there was more to that interview.  Wish I could see the rest of it.
    • Starter that would probably have been at AAA in 2024. Taken by the Guardians.  26, only 5'11".  Probably a reliever if he makes it to the majors. https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=gillis000con   Not taken were: Hudson Haskin, soon to be 25 year old outfielder with 60 speed, and the ability to put up a 360 OBP and a 800 OPS in both AA and AAA.  2nd round pick.  Right handed bat who might be about to back up Mullins in center a some point in 2024.  Doesn't have to be on 40 man but could be in ST.  Coming off hip surgery that shorten his 2023.   Poor arm and lack of power make him a bench player.  But a good line drive hitter.  Makes up for poor jumps and routes with his speed. https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=haskin000hud Maverick Handley, will be 26 years old in March catcher that could be the O's 3rd catcher in 2024.   Had a 373 OBP at AAA last year.  Good on the base paths.   Strong arm.  Threw out 34% of base stealer last year.  Doesn't need to be on the 40 man but will be in ST.  Had 9 errors in 2024 which  is too high. https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=handle000mav
    • He becomes a free agent at the end of the year.  It’s a one year thing.  If they are really good, it will have been worthwhile, but they could just be mediocre.
    • This would likely be their best investment.  Pay for great management that can find cheaper talent.
    • There are a few problems. One, Scott has regressed big time. He can't make shots at all. Young has a bit too, although he had a big game against Penn State. Those two need to score a lot if this team wants to do anything.  The team has zero depth. None of the freshmen have looked that good. Kaiser finally made some big shots tonight, but has struggled mightily. Same thing with Harris-Smith, he has struggled big time. We are counting on those two being impact players right away, and it doesn't look like they are. Lamothe doesn't get any playing time. There is no one off the bench that is good. Batchelor sort of sucks. Losing Martinez and Hart hurt a lot, they both brought energy and scoring. Long brings a little, but his game is limited. The good news is the season is still young. The losses against Davidson and UAB were bad without a doubt. Aside from that they don't have any bad losses. If they had lost against Penn State at home, which they almost did, that would have been trouble.  Julian Reese looks to have improved a lot, I will say that. He is not good at the free throw line, but he is a monster rebounder and can score around the hoop. Finally, 3 point shooting- they suck. Like really bad. Willard needs to recruit some shooters badly. If the freshmen improve and Scott finds his game, this team will get better. But I don't have any large hopes for this year. If they make the tournament as an 8-10 that would be a small miracle.
    • Let us have our fun and hope for the worst possible outcome.   Soto was DRS  -4 and OAA -9 playing LF last year.  We can only hope it gets even worse in NY.   Surprisingly, his 35 homers show an expected home run total of only 27 if playing all games in Yankee Stadium.   In old Yankee stadium they used to call LCF Death Valley.  I guess it’s still kind of big out there.   Good luck in NY, Juan.  NOT!
