Will the next few weeks reshape the future of the organization?

The Orioles are an undermanned team playing exceptionally well right now.  They have a very good farm system that is about to produce several new young players to the ML team.

Tomorrow, the team has what can be argued as the most important draft in team history. They have the first pick, a ton of draft pool money and lots of early picks.

And then, we are only a few weeks away from the trade deadline, a deadline in which the team may trade off for future pieces but also add to the current and 2023 ML roster.

There is a pretty good chance that we will be look back in 2-3 years and say these couple of weeks were vital to the success or failure of future teams.

My personal hope is that we get Jones tomorrow, along with multiple other promising pieces, trade a few vets, bring up some of the kids who are ready and add to the starting rotation for this year and the future.

Either way, it’s an exciting time to be an Os fan and we haven’t been able to say that for quite some time.

This is a good hype job.   Its going to be pretty hard for this draft to be more important to the team than the 2019 draft where Elias picked Adley, Gunnar and Stowers.   The draft will be additive to an already highly ranked farm system.

As far as the deadline.   Right now the O's are 2 1/2 out in the wild card race.  This is the first July since 2018 that the O's have been in striking distance of the playoffs.  I agree that we may look back in a few years and say this was the turning point for the franchise.    But that will happen if the O's make the playoffs by keeping their veterans like Mancini, Lyles,  and Santander.

Turning a loser into a playoff team is a big deal.

Are the O's undermanned? Amazingly not in the pen.     Adding Adley has been a big jump front for the defense, pitching staff and the offense.   He is among the best defensive catcher in baseball and the pitchers trust him to block balls in the dirt.  BIg, big development for the team.

The O's have two aces that we have not even seem yet but may play a role in the final two months.   Grayson and DL healthy would not make the starters undermanned.  Lyles has been showing up big.  Wells and Kremer are showing they belong in the rotation.   And Watkins and Voth are surprising mostly due to how Holt has improved them.

I would say the offense has improved to slightly above average.  Staying healthy will be the big test.

The defense is outstanding most nights.   Highlight reel stuff.  Its a key to the turnaround of this team.  Mateo at SS is a highlight all by himself.   Mullins and Hays also.   Love what Urias is doing with he glove and the bat.

This is a building young team.   Playing at a level we have not seen in years.  The teams depth is in the minors with Grayson, DL, Stowers, Vavra, Gunnar and Westburg.   If there was a injury there will be little drop-off in talent with those replacements.

Is this draft important? Sure but not more that 2019.  Is the deadline important? Sure.  Its important not to trade away the veterans that hold this team together and to keep the progress we see every night to keep happening.

The 2019 draft has turned out great..doesn’t mean it’s more important.  Agree that the argument is there though.

And yea, they are undermanned.  Just as 2012 was too.  It happens.  It’s ok.

The story of the first half for me is getting lemonade out of lemons with unexpected (working on training my thinking away from bad) pitchers.     Gunnar's development a runner-up, but after the 2021 Giants as an example of how far cutting edge insights can improve a team with a weak projection, some of the fun of now is who knows whether this kind of pitching outcome can sustain.

The mouthwatering bit with DL, Grayson and better pitchers accessible via use of the tool of money is it doesn't have to be all smoke and mirrors the last 12 weeks.    You're probably spending a Billion the rest of the decade, a small advance may be warranted for 1/7ths of your Adley seasons with continued strong enough play.    Even below the high school studs, 50 pitch chunks of even guys like Bradish and Vallimont coming into or back into play could be helpful.    Keegan Akin is looking a bit tuckered, but this is what streaming Arm Barn guys is for.

Good OP.  Lots of big decisions to be made in the next two weeks, that  could have ramifications for 5-10 years.   The team is on the cusp of becoming a winner again, and some good decisions here could ensure this team gets further and sustains success longer than the 2012-16 teams.   I’m pretty bullish on what the near future looks like for this team, more so than at the beginning of the season.  I’m really looking forward to seeing where the team goes from here.
