If this is just that they think Phillips is a better version of McKenna, I don't hate it. McKenna's never put up a 2.4WAR year, and I don't think he ever will.

I can’t say I understand this move.   Phillips is the kind of guy you sign on a minor league deal in the offseason and give an invite to spring training.

I don’t get it either. He might be better than McKenna but this could also be a push. 

This doesn’t make us that much better or worse.

It would seem like a push to me, and McKenna is making league min while Phillips is making $1.4mm (or whatever is left of it for the rest of the season) AND we had to pay to get him. Very bizarre in my opinion.

Phillips is out of options, so he would have to be DFA'd. Why would we pay cash for someone if we don't plan on keeping him? While I like Phillips and he seems to be a fun guy, this trade is a bit strange.

Phillips has more upside than McKenna, IMO. 

Not sure how much that really matters when discussing backup/part-time OFs on a non-contending team though.

I would hope they were trying to buy pitchers with multiple years of control, but the trades fell through. I wouldn’t really call this buying at the trade deadline. This is just picking up another teams scraps for depth.

We know Santander can’t play in Toronto maybe Diaz can’t as well so they adding depth for the 6 games we have vs them.
