From Roch today:

Double-A Bowie pitcher Zach Peek and high Single-A Aberdeen’s Seth Johnson underwent Tommy John surgery yesterday, with both procedures handled by Dr. Keith Meister in Dallas.

Johnson was acquired from the Rays in the three-team deal that sent Trey Mancini to the Astros.

It will be interesting to see which pitcher is back on the mound first

Zach Peek threw a rehab game in the FCL and it was the kind of thing you see in rookie ball.

- Triple

- Wild pitch on a strikeout followed by a throwing error by the catcher on the play, runner to 2B.

- Error by the 3B, runner scores, batter all the way to 3B.

- Passed ball, runner scores

- Single

- Two ground outs and Peek is done for the day

- Reliever comes in and allows two walks and a HBP, so the runner Peek left behind scores.

So for Peek, 0.2 IP, 4 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 1 K.   Not a line you see every day.

"Johnson, the organization’s No. 16 prospect according to MLB Pipeline, is expected to pitch in the FCL this weekend to start his injury rehab assignment. He hasn’t faced batters since May 20, 2022 with High-A Bowling Green."

"Johnson’s stay in the FCL could be brief. The Orioles want him at Single-A Delmarva before the season ends."

Rehab doubleheader for Johnson and Peek tonight. And two others.

Johnson threw two scoreless in Delmarva, 1 hit and 1 strikeout.

Peek did not fare as well at Aberdeen.  2.1 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 5 BB, 0 K’s.

Baumler also threw in the Delmarva game, 3 IP 1 run 1 hit 2 BB, 3 K’s.

And, Means 4.1 iP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K’s at Norfolk.

Johnson is scheduled to start for Bowie tonight in what I expect is his final appearance of the year.

Peek closed out his Aberdeen rehab last Thursday with a really strong outing, 4 no-hit innings with a walk and 6 strikeouts.   I didn’t hear anything about a year-end promotion for him, so I assume that’s it for him.

The O’s have a bevy of MiL pitchers who recently returned from TJ surgery and could be candidates to pitch in the AFL: Johnson, Peek, Kyle Brnovich, Brandon Young and Carter Baumler.  Nice to have these five arms back in the fold.  I’m not aware of any O’s MiL pitchers who have gotten injured in 2023 and required TJ surgery (am I forgetting anyone?), so next season the org should begin the year at full strength.

Any guesses on who, if anyone, we send to the AFL from the above group?
