I'm not saying that we're going to be competing for the division, just that we won't be one of the 10 worst teams in baseball, we'll be slightly above that.

Wieters/Jones/Markakis in 2010, so sexy.

You mean in 2009???

I expect they will all be with us this season.

Look, I know most of you don't know who I am, perhaps never read any of my posts.

But I'm throwing my hat into the ring after reading ten pages of arguments...

That was ridiculous.

I just was in the hospital for a whole day, come home hoping to read OH about a Roberts rumor, and I waste my time reading grown men argue on an internet board. First, you all have never met in real life, as far as I know. So don't get all worked up. We're discussing baseball, and everyone and their arrogant attitudes is worried about being right. ABOUT HYPOTHETICAL SITUATIONS. Look, if its that big of a deal. Please take it elsewhere. PM. Facebook. Hell, telephone. Obviously everyone involved is well-liked here, and I'm probably speaking out of place. But for the sake of the entire OH website, just stop. I know I speak for many in requesting the posts are substance-related to the Orioles, not personal debates. Please.

P.S. I've been a member for over a year, and read everyday, I just don't post that often..

So back to the subject at hand...

While I don't think Floyd will do as well as he did last year (although it would be a pleasant surprise) I would gladly take his stats and throw them into the foundation of our rotation. To have him, Guthrie, Tillman, Jake A., and Matusz makes me pretty happy with the direction of our pitching.

Getting Getz back in the deal is absolutely necessary, and I would do everything I could to try to get Fields, or another possibly blocked piece as well. Yes including Olson or another guy to do it. Liz would work for me too although I think he'll make a great reliever.

Why not this? Roberts for Floyd/Getz and then send Olson and Penn to SD for Kouzmanoff.

Sorry to hear you were in the hospital.

Really dont believe there are any other updates other than Roch believes we would want Getz & Floyd....White Sox are looking for a 1 for 1

Future Owner just started a thread involving Dunn, Hardy, and Floyd...I proposed a 3 team trade...see if it fits the bill?

I would think that San Diego's agenda has probably changed with the pending sale. I would be surprised to see Peavy dealt now as well.

No I meant 2010, cause that was the year we were discussing.

They'll be sexy this year, but given one more year of progression for each of them, they'll be even sexier in 2010.

I agree & it will be interesting when the young arms get a year or 2 under their belt. We can only hope for a bright future. I still will holdout hope for a ownership change.

BTW, just to further this...While I said the poster was 100% right, the first post Rshack noted against me was me quoting ANOTHER POSTER!!!! Those weren't MY WORDS! Of course, Rshack didn't mention this and in that post, 6 million was mentioned..the figure Wieters got.

Oh, dear... I have made an error... you were indeed quoting someone else (without using the quote function).

My mistake.

But that's ok, there's lots more...

Actually, you were still hoping for $6m but introducing the idea of $8m way earlier than that.

Just a few minutes later, you were asking others if they had a problem with going up to $8m.

This was with 28 hours to go... earlier than I had remembered.

As for the "if it's necessary" excuse, how does that work?

AFAIK, the main way people are effective with Boras is to call his bluff. Otherwise, he keeps BS'ing you.

For example, both AM (with Wieters) and Cashman (with Tex) got it done by calling his bluff and waiting for Boras to fold and call them back.

Which Boras did both times to accept their offer.

So, how could you possibly call his bluff at $6m, yet at the same time be willing to go up to $10m "if necessary"?

How could you possibly do that?

  • SG: Scott, $6m is my very final offer... if that will get it done.
  • Boras: Well, forget it, it's won't get it done. At that price, my boy Wieters will go back to college and deal with another team next year.
  • SG: [pause] Well.... [pause]... OK, how about $8m?
  • Boras: Nope.
  • SG: [pause] Well... [long pause]... OK, $10m, take it or leave it.
  • Boras: Deal.

SG, if you're willing to go higher, how in the world are you gonna call his bluff?

By definition, calling his bluff means that you are at your limit. That's what it means.

Here's what we know: $6m was AM's limit and Boras folded, but not 'til the very last minute. $6m wasn't your limit. You would've spent more.

    • The Orioles have a single regular reliever with an ERA under 3, and that's Coulombe and he's only been back less than a week. Last year they had 4: Bautista, Cano, and Coulombe. Name 2023 ERA 2024 ERA DIFF Yennier Cano 2.11 3.2 1.09 Cionel Perez 3.54 4.61 1.07 Danny Coulombe 2.81 2.2 -0.61 Jacob Webb 3.27 3.15 -0.12 Bryan Baker 3.6 5.01 1.41 Those are some pretty big dropoffs for Cano, Perez. And while Baker isn't a regular, he's certainly been abysmal aside from like a 3-4 week stretch. But it's not just a regression for Cano and Perez, but we also need to look at the guys masquerading/masqueraded as a closer this year in Kimbrel and Seranthony. Kimbrel had a 5.33 ERA, Seranthony with a 3.43. Between the 2 of them, that's nearly 3x worse performance than Bautista. Bowman has been serviceable, but imploded recently. Soto has been awesome for a spell, but he's had periods where things looked really off. The bullpen is absolutely the Achilles heel of this club. Their collective ERA is 4.26 this season. The Royals had the worst in the AL bullpens up until the O's imploded yet again last night. The Royals bullpen ERA is 4.21, btw. It is a major concern going into the playoffs.
    • I thought about Rivera,  but I figured his ability to play two positions would keep him around.    It will be interesting to see what they decide.     One of the non-pitchers will need to be left off as I understand it.     13 max
    • Freddie Freeman on crutches after the game last night.
    • I think there's room to keep both.   Shed some bad bullpen arms like Baker and Bowman.   Either Rivera or Gregory Soto can go.   So even if you add McDermott you can keep both Slater and Kjerstad.
    • Good information.  I would agree for sure if it was a one game series.  Assuming the series goes 3 games, would you keep Slater over Kjerstad?     I guess if we are prioritizing RH bats, then I’d drop Holliday.
    • Look at who you replying to, it's his thing.   Means nothing, adds absolutely nothing to the discussion.   Put him on your ignore list.   2-1 so far They made the playoffs They won that night and clinched a playoff spot
    • Understood. My comment was 100% above vibes. They went 2-4 over their last six and lost 3 of 4 to Seattle to drop out of the division and into the wildcard spot. It wasn't a months long limp like the Orioles, but that--at least in my book--counts as limping in. They had no apparent "momentum" going in, but still turned it around. That was the point.
