Orioles select Benboom, DFA Castro

I don't agree with your assessment.   I don't think this means Bemboom or Gallagher will be on the team on opening day.   Bemboom is a 1-3 service year player which makes him easy to cut without paying his salary for the year.   I think he is a place holder until the O's sign or trade for a veteran catcher  over the winter who can  play great defense and hit some.

Gallagher is arbitration eligible and I think its very questionable if he makes the 40 man roster when its set in late November.   Though Gallagher is a veteran backup he doesn't hit much and Elias is probably looking for someone better to backup Adley.

This has nothing to do with whether Handley is put on the 40 man roster IMO.  Handley is going to play at AAA next year anyway.  I think he is probably protected.

A weird time to do this, but to me this shows that Chirinos is 100% gone this off season and they will roll with Gallagher/Benboom into camp for the backup spot. This also almost entirely eliminates Handley being on the 40 to avoid the Rule 5.

It's Bemboom not Benboom.  I honestly thought it was Beimboom.  lol  Was there a worse hitter in the majors this year than him?  I can't imagine that the O's won't try to upgrade backup catcher.  Is Handley that far away?  If he has good defense and can put up a .600 OPS, that sounds decent for a backup catcher.  That would be a solid improvement over Chirinos.

The .600 OPS part sounds like Gallagher who has a career .659 OPS in 469 PA in part-time duty.   I'm not sure about his defense but I would guess it's not bad although his CS % (21%) is slightly below average (26%).

Elias seems committed to add some key veterans to the team his off season to help the team make the playoffs.   If I had to guess  the positions I would say backup catcher,  veteran starter better than Lyles, and a middle of the order bat at DH.

So though I think Handley gets protected this off season I don't think he is in the running for the backup catcher job next year.

If he isn't in the running for the backup job next year they need to not waste a 40 man slot on him.

It's one or the other.

I don't think it's one or the other.  They'll be protecting a lot of guys who probably don't have realistic chances of making the team next spring.   I do not believe they will protect Handley but I don't believe it's got to be one or the other.

You don't burn a 40 man slot for a backup catcher with an ETA two years away.

I would hope by this point in the process their 40 man slots are more valuable than that.
