I don't think anyone is postulating that there is a need.

I think what is being considered, is whether there might be a net benefit.

You seem to be holding fast to the idea that there is no possible trade of Mullins for Pitching that might represent an overall benefit to the team.

I think you know that isn't the case.

I don’t believe there’s a possible trade for Mullins that increases overall team value that couldn’t just be had with money.

for example, the many talked about ideas, trade Mullins for Lopez and replace with Cowser or just sign Bassit and keep Mullins and Cowser. I think your team is better short and long by just signing Bassit.

that also says Bassit or equivalent will come here

It also fails to consider the increasing cost of Mullins through his arb years (which you will be relieved of in a trade)... and the risk that 2022 is more indicative of Mullins' norm than 2021 was. And also doesn't consider the earlier point.. that There is a large bolus of premium outfield prospects making it's way through the farm, most of whom are angling for CF...  So you're going to have to make some trades before the pileup happens and people can fleece you because they know you have to sell.

All of that said... you've postulated a PARTICULAR hypothetical here, and are weighing the PARTICULAR merits of that hypothetical...  which is quite different from making the general statement that there is no possible trade.

Mullins for Kiemaier, Phillips, or Bellinger  is swapping a top of the lineup hitter (at least vs righties) for a bottom of the lineup hitter  who is probably a drag on the offense.    I doubt that is the direction that Elias goes.

It wouldn't be Mullins for Kiermaier or Phillips, it would be Mullins for Kiermaier/McKenna or Phillips/McKenna plus whatever quality SP you get back for Mullins, i.e. the oft-discussed Pablo Lopez.
