Carrasco?

I was thinking of posting same thing.  Is Hays too little?  Is Santander too much?  Either way trading one of them and having an outfield of Stowers, Mullins, Hays/Santander would be at least status quo.  Maybe add a lefty OF/DH until Cowser is ready.  Rutschman can dh against lefties where the lefty acquisition sits.  Perhaps when Westburg comes up, Urias is part-time DH, also.  Maybe Michael Brantley could be that "affordable" one-year left-handed bat.

To "solve" the rest of the pitching, I would go with two swing-men on two year contracts to give flexibility and help with limiting innings as needed.  I would sign both Ross Stripling and Seth Lugo.

Our pitching would then be:

Carlos Carrasco -- 32 starts

Kyle Bradish, Kyle Gibson, Tyler Wells, Dean Kremer, Grayson Rodriguez - 20 starts each

Seth Lugo, Ross Stripling, John Means - 10 starts each

There will be some injuries/set-backs.  Guys like DL Hall and Austin Voth will be there to fill-in and work out of the pen.  By 2024 all of those guys should be able to up their workloads and Lugo and Stripling can fall back into full-time bullpen roles and spot starter.

Nobody would be taxed and the bullpen would be fairly loaded.  When the guys above don't start they will work out of the pen.

It also wouldn't restrict us from making a deal if the right starter comes up at the break.

The article makes a good case for why the Mets would want a very young starter or more bullpen depth.

I'd love to add Cookie, but I doubt you get 32 starts. Technically, he's only done it once (2017), the only year he's reached 200 IP. That being said, he pitched fairly well last year and managed 29 starts and 152 innings.

If we agree to eat all of the money, he should be able to be had for much less I would think. Some kind of B-level prospect or two. Especially with Carrasco being a 1-year rental.

Both Hays and Santander retain surplus value - I feel Carrasco nearly a wash.

During the World Series I'd actually penciled him into this year's mix, then had to cross him off when Mets exercised his mid-teens option.    I think he was a close call.

He fits our profile if available, but even after Senga, would understand if Mets still doing the you can never have too much pitching thing.     Dillon Tate?   Jorge Mateo?

Tate, or another reliever, was my first thought of someone that could be a match for Carrasco. The Mets are looking for bullpen help. Basically their whole 2022 bullpen became FAs, and they've started to reconstruct it but need to do more.

    • There have been 2-3 times when it seemed logical to call him up but they don’t.   I’ve never understood this thing they have for Baker.  Hey, Cole Irvin is available again!!
    • While we lost some talented players, I think the consensus was some of the players we lost were actually blocking more talented prospects. The loss of Westburg and Urias should have been mostly offset by Holliday and Mayo. Instead, they were truly abysmal.  Povich had some nice moments but he was disappointing as well.  Maybe our expectations were too high - Elias is not going to hit on every prospect, and even the ones that turn out good may take a while to adjust. Still, I think it is fair to have expected more out of Mayo and Holliday since the organization deemed them ready to promote.  In addition to the prospects, you had Adley hit a wall, going from a 6 WAR pace to replacement level, and Cowser and O'Hearn both struggling.  Certainly injuries hurt us, but we should have been strong enough to overcome them. Maybe not to sustain a 105 win pace but I think it is fair to say we should have been able to beat 95 wins and win the division even with the injuries.
    • I was wondering what the knee-jerk reaction would be to an ugly game last night, but the truth is that the bullpen is fine, as is the rest of the team. We lack a true lockdown closer, but we have six arms by my count that are very good relievers in Akin, Perez, Coulombe, Webb, Cano, and Domingez. And you can add Suarez to that list next week, and possibly Povich, who should also make the PS roster as a lefty long relief option to mirror Suarez. Anyway, that game could have and would have gone much differently, IMO, if it were a playoff game. Burnes obviously stays in longer and gets at least through the top of the order if not back down to the bottom third to hand it over to the bullpen. Hopefully we'd be able to scratch out some runs, but that's not the bullpen's fault.  This is an extremely good team with a lead. Let's hope we get on the board early and often starting tonight.
    • Boy, Brandon Young who has some decent numbers at Norfolk must be injured or unimpressive to the front office to not even get a look for this bullpen. Bryan Baker is almost a waste of a call up.
    • Povich is off vs Detroit at least. Even if they carry a 9 man pen, Doubt that 5 will be left handers
    • I hate to say it because they are all eligible to succeed or fail ( DC just coming back ), would probally go with Soto.
