Mateo Trade Potential

Anytime the opposing pitcher throws a strike inside, especially with 2 strikes, that pitcher should be fined by his team. He absolutely can not hit nor lay off the outside pitch and that’s why the slump is here.

But that last hit he got was on a middle in strike and he loves that pitch.

He laid off at least one that ab outside.  Two iirc.

That's the difference between him hot and cold.  Can he get himself into favorable hitters' counts?

Yea, he laid off a low and away pitch. But had the guy thrown it there again, im guessing he swings.

He just can’t help himself if it’s anywhere close.

That's the difference between Jorge making 200 million and 20 million.  We will see.

He was hitting outside stuff fine during his hot streak.

I honestly can’t think of a decent player who goes as cold as Mateo does when he’s off.   He’s been worthless at the plate for three weeks.

I can actually pinpoint the moment it started.  It was the night Santander had his 16-pitch at bat that ended with a single.  Mateo, who’d been great up until then, came up as the next next batter thinking that the pitcher was exhausted and would throw him a cookie.  He swung from his shoes at three straight pitchers’ pitches, whiffed, and has looked terrible ever since.  It’s literally like he lost his entire approach that had worked great for a month in a single at bat.

He’s never making 200M. Lol

If he lays off that pitch consistently he OPSes like .900 for a full season and might command a 9 figure deal.

But that's kind of like saying, "if a Ray Charles could see..."  because he's probably only making incremental improvements in his pitch recognition/plate discipline at this point in his career.

You nailed it.  And I don't get it how it goes back and forth like that.  MLB Network previously noted that his increased performance stemmed from a single at bat against a regular position player, and how his timing changed from a leg kick to just a toe tap on that at bat, and he carried that forward ever since, and that's been the key to his early success.  But as you noted he had that terrible at bat after the Santander marathon and he's been terrible ever since.  For good or for bad, it seems when something clicks or unclicks for him he can't turn back easily to what was working before.  So frustrating.

It's bizarre and pretty unique.

Some hitters never lay off that pitch.  Adam Jones, obviously a much better hitter thsn Mateo, seldom laid off.

This. Mateo is basically the Adam Jones of the contemporary team. Both great athletes, but have obvious issues with their approach.
