Sort of unsure how he managed to a 4.03 FIP despite the meager K/9 numbers (low enough BB/9 numbers help, but still doesn't seem like it would be enough).

Ever look at Palmer’s K/9’s? He talks about inducing weak contact as a way of life and grabbing the occasional strikeout when it was needed. Maybe that’s Greinke now. The world has gone K/9 crazy.

Point taken but guys are most likely hitting the ball much harder today than they were 50 years ago on average. Therefore missing bats is more vital to having success today than it was back then.

I could be wrong.

The Royals were 13-13 when Grienke started. 52-84 when he didn’t. He didn’t go much past 85 pitches last year, but he put up a lot of 5IP 2 ER type of starts.

The Royals have cleared $6 million in payroll by trading Taylor and Mondesi. It looks like they’re dangling Nicky Lopez now, and that would free up another $3 million. Are they doing all of this to free up money to bring Grienke back?  It sure looks that way.

A strikeout is an out 99% of the time. A ball put in play is, on average, an out 70-73% of the time. (These numbers may have changed slightly but you get the idea)

Point being, missing bats and getting Ks is infinitely better than having someone put the ball in play.

Our own Scott McGregor had a 3.8 K/9 for his career, and a 4.06 FIP. But it sure did get ugly for him in the last 3-4 years.

He also was not the magician that Grienke is.

All league wide K/9 rates were much lower when Palmer and McGregor played, so it’s not really helpful to cite a pitcher’s K rate from 40-50 years ago when discussing today’s game.

However, it has always been true that K’s are not the only element of pitching.  Avoiding walks and pitches in locations where hitters can make hard contact and generate good launch angles are also very important.   Keeping the batter guessing as to what pitch is coming is important.

I would bet that teams have far more sophisticated means of grading a pitcher’s performance than just counting when the batter hit the ball and when he didn’t.  I was listening to an interview with an O’s MiL pitcher (Armbruester I think) and he alluded to getting a video of every outing where the pitches with the right locations and spin were highlighted in blue in some way.  Would have loved some follow-up on that.

Seems like it's 26-29% better

/sorry, flashbacks to getting called out for using the word "countless" in one draft of my master's thesis ("no, we know the number")
