Advertising on jerseys

How do you know your business model has failed miserably? You decide you need to put advertisements on your uniforms! Tacky and ridiculous.

Ehh. Poor take. Two regional sports networks have basically kicked the can this week. And it doesn't just effect MLB but NBA and NHL too. TV rights aren't what they were two decades ago with cord cutters. Estimates are something like 20% of previous TV deal revenue if teams opted for a pay-to-stream your team scenario. Gotta make additional money somehow. Too many games annually for it to have an NFL style viewing schedule.

This may seem like an odd question, but it is legit what I thought of when I saw this thread:

The O's sell old used jerseys. I bought one at Fanfest one year, with Ruiz on the back (for the bullpen catcher), and it has 2 sleeve patches: 2014 Post Season is one, and the other is Tom Clancey, to honor Tom Clancey after he died.

So, I wonder: Say you get a deal for a sleave patch with Comcast at the end of a season, the season ends, and then Comcast goes out of business. A new deal is struck with Google and the new season jerseys have that patch.

Would having a rare, hardly seen Comcast patch, only worn for a month, make a used jersey more valuable, less valuable, or would nobody care and it has no impact?

While I will agree that it is tacky and ridiculous, I would disagree on a failed business model. It is simply an additional stream of revenue. The Orioles have withheld from the whoring out of the stadium name thus far, but less traditional, non Atlantic cities have benefited from the revenue of such things. My wife is a Giants fan and she could care less if it is pacbell, AT&T or whatever nor do I. I like Camden yards being Camden yards but if they get $20mm a year to name it Dunkin park and they sign Henderson and Adley long term, I couldn’t care. The go to for people right now is, “they will just put the money in the bank and not reinvest in the team”.  That has proven to be false over the years. They do invest in the team, they have just made terrible choices in the investments. Davis, Belle, Ponson, Bonilla, Roberts.  They spend but it has been not great choices and they get gun shy for a few years and then make the same dumb choice again. I say they, but I mean Peter. We haven’t experienced a time since him that there has been a legitimate chance to spend wisely on a player. We will see soon enough if that happens. Don’t get me wrong, I wanted them to spend $40mm for one year of Verlander but not my money and I am always the optimist and think they have a legit chance this year.

Seems like most teams are doing this. I feel like if the Os didn’t there’d be just as many critics saying they should be taking advantage of that revenue stream and are dumb for not doing so, than there will be saying it’s sacrilege and greed and whatnot. Same with the Sportsbook. A lot of teams are doing it, might as well get on board.

I certainly agree they need to spend that revenue on the team. I guess we’ll see about that.

Didn't your pappy tell you about going up in the woods to use this metal thing to scrape bark off the trees, and they'd use that to tan the hides? It backbreaking work, you got paid next to nothing, and everyone died at the age of 37.

But at least the local nine didn't have ads on their jerseys.

The Baltimore Sun tans the Hydes as well.
