  1. 1. How many WAR will Adley Rutschman get in 2023?

Adley has shaken off his June swoon.

After a .660 June OPS he was at .865 for July before today. That's basically right where his April/May were. Currently on a 7 game hitting streak, and hits in 15 out of 16 starts tracing back to June 28.

The blemish is that he has 4 BB and 16 K on the month.

Appears he is being more aggressive and it's working. Pitchers started challenging him and he is adjusting.

Adley’s usage by month:

March/April (28 team games): 20 starts at C, 2 finished as a defensive sub.  7 starts at DH.  1 game in which he pinch hit (also subbed on defense).  Started 27/28, pinch hit in the other.

May (28 team games): 19 starts at C, 2 finished as a defensive sub.  6 starts at DH.  2 games in which he pinch hit, one of which he also came in as a defensive sub.   Started 25/28, played 27/28.

June (24 team games): 17 starts at C, 1 finished as a defensive sub.  5 starts at DH.  Started 22/24, played 22/24.

July (26 team games): 17 starts at C.  6 starts at DH.  Came in once as a PH.  23/26 starts, 24/26 played.

August (4 games): 2 starts at C.  2 starts at DH.  4/4 games started.

Totals to date: 75/110 starts at C, 26/110 DH, 4/110 PH, 5/110 DNP.

It seems like Hyde has rested Adley just a bit more of late.  Through June, Adley started 56 of 80 (70%) of the games at C.  Since then, it’s 19 of 30 (63%).   And, Adley started 92.5% of the games through June (C or DH), only 90% since July 1.  He also hasn’t played as a defensive sub since July 1.

I think it’s good that Hyde has backed off him a little.  It’s helped that the team has played pretty well when McCann is behind the dish, unlike last year when they were pretty poor on the days a Chirinos caught.

Apparently playing against his former team who sold him for pennies on the dollar has motivated him just a bit?

McCann caught most of these Mets pitchers. He knows exactly what their stuff looks like from start to finish. The familiarity makes it much easier to hit, and he's passed that knowledge on to the other Orioles hitters for this series. Westburg said as much in his post game interview.

I’m sensing a long hot streak coming from Adley.   It’s sort of started already: .855 OPS his last 30 games, .915 his last 15 games, 1.018 his last 7 games.   I just have the gut feeling that he’s going to have a big road trip out on the West Coast and continue on from there.

Hyde has been going a little lighter on Adley’s workload of late, and it’s paid off because not only is Adley heating up, but McCann has been hitting of late.  McCann’s OPS since the all star break is well over .900.  His overall OPS of .649 is in the range of what you expect for a backup catcher, and now well above the .552 that Chirinos posted last year.

I wouldn't be opposed to McCann catching half the games remaining this regular season. Adley was pushed very hard by Hyde early on in the season. Too hard in my opinion and he looked worn down and sluggish. It's not easy to be 240 pounds crouch down for 3 hours every night. It takes its toll. Adley will catch every game in the postseason. As he should. The objective should be to prepare for a heavy postseason workload.

I understand Hyde's questionable usage of Adley in the 1st half. He's getting paid to win baseball games. And Adley is our best player. The value he provides as a hitting catcher is irreplaceable. That said, we need him to catch every game and play at a high level in October.

Does anyone here but me think AR could hit at a much higher level if he didn't have to catch?  I'm thinking he could be a super DH.  We need at least one big boomer in my opinion.  I think AR has the skills and power.  I'm not sure catcher is the right place for a 600 slugger.

Who are you suggesting catches?

You want McCann out there 120 games a year?

    • There have been 2-3 times when it seemed logical to call him up but they don’t.   I’ve never understood this thing they have for Baker.  Hey, Cole Irvin is available again!!
    • While we lost some talented players, I think the consensus was some of the players we lost were actually blocking more talented prospects. The loss of Westburg and Urias should have been mostly offset by Holliday and Mayo. Instead, they were truly abysmal.  Povich had some nice moments but he was disappointing as well.  Maybe our expectations were too high - Elias is not going to hit on every prospect, and even the ones that turn out good may take a while to adjust. Still, I think it is fair to have expected more out of Mayo and Holliday since the organization deemed them ready to promote.  In addition to the prospects, you had Adley hit a wall, going from a 6 WAR pace to replacement level, and Cowser and O'Hearn both struggling.  Certainly injuries hurt us, but we should have been strong enough to overcome them. Maybe not to sustain a 105 win pace but I think it is fair to say we should have been able to beat 95 wins and win the division even with the injuries.
    • I was wondering what the knee-jerk reaction would be to an ugly game last night, but the truth is that the bullpen is fine, as is the rest of the team. We lack a true lockdown closer, but we have six arms by my count that are very good relievers in Akin, Perez, Coulombe, Webb, Cano, and Domingez. And you can add Suarez to that list next week, and possibly Povich, who should also make the PS roster as a lefty long relief option to mirror Suarez. Anyway, that game could have and would have gone much differently, IMO, if it were a playoff game. Burnes obviously stays in longer and gets at least through the top of the order if not back down to the bottom third to hand it over to the bullpen. Hopefully we'd be able to scratch out some runs, but that's not the bullpen's fault.  This is an extremely good team with a lead. Let's hope we get on the board early and often starting tonight.
    • Boy, Brandon Young who has some decent numbers at Norfolk must be injured or unimpressive to the front office to not even get a look for this bullpen. Bryan Baker is almost a waste of a call up.
    • Povich is off vs Detroit at least. Even if they carry a 9 man pen, Doubt that 5 will be left handers
    • I hate to say it because they are all eligible to succeed or fail ( DC just coming back ), would probally go with Soto.
