Who’s your pick to have a career year?

In 2021 it was Mullins.

In 2022 it was Santander.

Who’s your 2023 pick to have the best year of his career?

While I’m tempted to say Adam Frazier 😇, I’ll go with Ryan Mountcastle.

This is a tough one. First of all we have so many young players that not many of them even have a full year to best.

I think Mullins and Bradish. Mullins probably won’t eclipse his 2021 numbers, but he’s poised for a big year. I think the WBC mattered, he’s going to come off of that being our co-captain with Adley.

Since several people have chosen him, I have to ask: What does a career year for Gibson look like?

He's had 3 seasons in his career eclipsing 3 WAR, going as high as 3.5 WAR.

Does anybody really expect him to put up ~5 WAR this year?

1: Mountcastle

2: Hays

3: Bautista. I know he's just getting started but I think he steps in and becomes a lock down closer. He really puts himself on the map this season.

Could definitely see this being Bautistas best year. He was someone I had considered.

Expect a 5 WAR?  Nah.  "Career years" aren't expected.  4+ is "reasonably" attainable.

It is?  20 pitchers had a 4 WAR season last year.  22 did it in 2021z

You think it’s reasonable to think Gibson could be one of the best 25 starters in all of MLB this year?

Santander put up a great showing in the WBC and looks locked in. I think he'll surpass what he did last year and look closer to his 2020 version with an OPS in the 800s. Hopefully with less time in the outfield, though in the WBC he looked a bit faster than I expected.

I also expect improvement from Mountcastle and Adley but they're young enough that I don't think this will be their peak.

    • I seriously doubt that we can easily find replacements "to restock" for another Bautista or Cano level reliever. These guys have been performing at Allstar levels (some of the best in the game). The chances that you can find that level of performance is not very high. Adn then the chances of another team being willing to give that away is even lower. Cincy has one, but he has 4 years of control left so the asking price will be high. And if you are going to have to pay anyway, why not pay for a starter? IMO one very good starter who can provide consistent length will help the BP tremendously. Right now we only have one of those guys, that is not enough to make it through a season. When we get to the part of the season that matters the most our BP guys will be fried just like last year.
    • I don't care who you are... if you've played 10 years in the bigs, then you are in the top .01% of humans who have ever played this game.
    • I agree with your larger premise in that comparing other teams situations to this one is more apples to oranges. But IMO it is for a reason that you left unstated... We have a HORRIBLE owner. I am not very sorry that winning and spending is even a priority for JA. He seems to be focused more on how to maximize profits and do some community development. Thus until proven otherwise, even though we may speculate on trades for vets, I have seen nothing in JA's history or handling of the team that he would even green light adding  a contract like Goldschmidt. I don't believe Elias prefers not to spend because of some philosophy he has, it is more of the case that he cannot spend on make big moves given ownership. I know some have spun his comments last trade deadline and into the offseason about "lift off" meaning something else. But IMO it seems kind of clear that ownership (as usual) served as an impediment to him adding to the team in a meaningful way. No one can convince that when Elias first made the comments regarding "lift off" that what he had in mind was an offseason of Gibson and Frazier. Of course, I could be wrong, but it just doesn't appear that he is in an environment where he has full ownership investment and support. Finally, I don't see players that we have that we could trade for a top pitching prospect, unless you either want to move Mullins (which would be a horrible idea to me) or if you are proposing a prospect for prospect trade which rarely happens. Even so, that is more of a continue the rebuild move because as we have seen over the last few years with some of the best prospects in the game, they take time to develop. I think there is a very small chance that a pitching prospect can come and help in a meaningful way this year. More chances than not the performance that you get may be somewhere in the realm of Grayson's.
    • They didn't play together for very long, which is a shame.
    • I have to think that some of the potential over usage of bullpen pitchers is because Elias told him something to the effect of "We probably won't trade for an elite starting pitcher but I can and will restock the bullpen." I could see the team operating with that strategy.
    • Yea I am all avout pushing the Paul Goldscmidt narrative
    • Saw someone on Twitter that I follow bring up the idea of the Os trading for Peralta. I tend to doubt that they would trade him since he’s pretty cheap for the next 3 years but he would be an interest target if they would look to move him.
