Regarding MacPhail

Over the course of the past few days, MacPhail has proven that my opinion on him was rash and unjustified. I should have waited for the entire off season before I made such statements as to say he is inept and not fit for his job. Ultimately, he has proved for the time being that he is right for the job and that he is continuing to do things that benefit the Orioles for the long term. I am happily eating crow on this issue. Props to all those who held faith during this offseason. I may not like every move he makes, and I know I don't like the pace at which he works, but I am slowly becoming a believer again. Hopefully this will continue through this season into the trading deadline, and the Orioles will be on the verge of a dynasty sooner rather than later.

Not so sure what your conceding on???

The Markakis deal was a given ...Its amazing it took this long to get done.

Really...Pauley was a minor move. So is the Pie deal unless they catch lightning in a bottle. The Rotation is still in shambles & the Orioles would be better off in AAA.

Solid of you to accept the crow.

I am curious though - what about his pace do you not like? He's made move after move after move this off-season. Unless I'm mistaken, the O's have been by far the most active organization in baseball this off-season - and they may not be done yet.

I'm truly interested in why his pace doesn't work for you?

Just that it took awhile for anything to get done. The Pie move was something that could have been made a month and a half ago. MacPhail has a deliberate pace, and I'm pretty sure thats tough to argue when you look at the big picture. Some people like that, but some people don't like that. I'd prefer him to be more rapid with his moves. I really like the pace at which things happened this past week or so.

I hate to be critical of AM Blue Dog ...But none of the moves they made are considered major moves.

They've brought in a defensive bat challenged SS, a decent C/backup catcher, a ton of 5th starters.

Apology accepted. :D

However, I thought your previous conclusion on AM was due to information that was told to you by some "in the know"?

I'll admit it was partially influenced by that, but once I sat back and looked at things over the past year, nothing really seemed to get done or improve. Now things are getting done that show a trend towards improvement. I guess all along I was just waiting for something good for the Orioles to happen.

Wouldn't every team? :D

Nah. You prefer to save that for the Kool Aid drinkers.

I don't think you have to eat crow. I have been supportive of AM since he was announced but there is no question the guy is methodical. Thats not your style. It isnt the style of a lot of people on here. Being a fan is all about emotion and for the large part MacPhail does not appear to act on emotion, so I think it is normal for people to get upset with the speed he acts. I agree with an earlier poster, the O's have been one of the more active organizations this offseason. I think a lot of people have Teixieraitis and that is understandable, but you have to look at the big picture and anyone that is not biased against him has to agree that we are making progress. That is not something we have been able to say in 10 years.

As good a weekend as AM just had, it doesn't change that he didn't do enough for the past 11 months.

I thought it has been well-established that the famous "11 months" was an arbitrary time-frame that had no significance in the long term. Didn't the last weekend prove that as so? Isn't it still too early to judge him for his actions of this offseason? Isn't it pure speculation to think that AM could have or should have traded some of the other players (Sherrill, Huff, whoever) for a good return?

I'd like to see what grade you give AM in the other thread poll. If it's a C or below, I'd be a little surprised. If it's a B or above, I think you may be coming across as more negative than you actually feel.

Again, I'll rush to MacPhail's defense on this basis: we know what he's done, and when he's done it. What we don't (and can't) know is whether any of this stuff could have been done sooner...or if things he hasn't been able to do can be "blamed" on MacPhail, or on others. (For example, I don't blame MacPhail for not signing Teixeira at all, as I believe he never wanted to come here. I also believe that the Markakis deal got done when Markakis was ready to sign.)
