Do you think the fact that Gunnar is represented by Boras could make it less likely for him to sign an extension before FA?

I don’t buy the whole idea that hw won’t extend because he’s a Boras client.

First of all, Boras clients have extended before FA. Secondly, Gunnar seems like a different dude. A much more down to earth kid who doesn’t appear to be driven by an inflated ego.

And lastly, he is very happy and surrounded by people he considers to be some of his best friends.

Now, I don’t think he would sign a 10 year deal. I think he would sign an 7-8 year deal or some 15 year deal.

Personally, I wouldn’t go to the Tatis route with him but I would happily go the Corbin Carroll route.  At the very least, you have to make him turn it down.

Gunnar and Holliday are your must extend (or at least must offer) guys. Both are Boras guys. Go to him with a contract for both that still allows them to hit FA pre 30 y/o.

De La Cruz fell off a cliff in July. In his last 60 games he's batting .195 / .276 / .346 with a 39% strike out rate.

Oh I know. I have him in my dynasty league and had the chance to trade him for Freddie Freeman just after the aforementioned cliff dive.

But what everyone else has said: he’s absurdly exciting and flashier than Gunnar and also from a marketing standpoint would help them in the Latino markets both in the US and abroad.

Same goes for Acuna.

Agree all around except still maintain that the timing of the potential deal (AFTER he’s won ROY and likely team MVP as opposed to before) will make him more expensive than Carroll on a AAV basis. But if you mean in terms of structure I totally agree.

JA is not extending Gunnar. We all know he's not. He is going to ride this window until his contract is up then let him walk or trade him.

I don’t think we can say that. The whole schtick was that they would spend when the team became competitive. I’d have to believe that even JA realizes that locking up a generational talent like Henderson, AR, Holliday means more to the longterm success of the franchise (literally top to bottom) than does spending money in free agency. If they are following the Houston/Tampa model, then they are following models that have shown it necessary to lock up certain franchise players. The Rays first did it with Longoria (and didn’t pay Price when it was his time), they invested in Franco (which, will probably turn out to be terrible for other reasons) and Houston paid Altuve and Bergman but chose not to lock up Correa long term.

Samwiched in the ALE, this is the only way that the O’s can compete. Tampa has the formula but they do spend. The O’s should be wise to do the same and I think Gunnar, AR and Holliday are probably the most likely candidates to be on the receiving ends of longterm deals. GrayRod though could be thrown into that if he keeps developing.

The Yankees had their big four. The O’s can have their Big Four and still maintain a payroll in the lower half of baseball, which, based on their revenue potential is probably about where they should. In years when they really have a chance to go for it maybe we see them bump payroll to $200million. They did it before and can (should) do it again.

Just a couple of weeks ago he decided to announce to the media how hard it would be to extend guys.

The way to go is a long term highly structured contract that has a strong floor a big guarantee and is laden with incentives that can pay him for consistent excellence and  individual accolades.

What Seattle did with Julio RodrIguez was creative and smart. The Orioles need to do something similar with Gunnar.

Just another reminder that Gunnar is under contract for the next 5 years regardless of whether he signs an extension or not and he won’t be making any real amount of money for 3 years of that and even the 4th years is likely paying him Pennies on the dollar for his expected production.

The “extra money” here is years 6, 7 and maybe 8. Will JA still have the team by then?

I agree with your points, but if JA has shown anything in recent years, it’s that given a chance he will often make a boneheaded, tone-deaf and/or shortsighted decision. I will be very happy to be proven wrong but I expect them to blow it with some if not all of our young talent.

Who is the last player we signed to a multiyear deal, regardless of size…. Cobb?

As @Can_of_corn said, JA already whinged about how tough it would be to lock up players without “significantly” raising prices. Ain’t the $22 beer cold!

The cold beer is $24 bucks.  The $22 beer is served warm.

But where does it get more expensive?  The next 5 years are essentially written in stone. Maybe a few million here or there but basically he’s looking at 50ishM the next 5 years…if things basically go perfectly.

    • I think it’s like when our fans are terrified because a team brings up a spot starter from AAA and we fear they are going to turn into Cy Young.
    • “It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops.” — A Bartlett Giamatti https://mason.gmu.edu/~rmatz/giamatti.html

    • Every year at the end of the season, I feel a little melancholy. For me, the end of summer is not the start of school or the arrival of fall, but the end of baseball season. Today is the last day of a long song, and I will miss it. I know we have at least four more days, but those are in a different category, although I will miss that too when it ends. During the darkest days of the season, I posted frequently that the worst day of baseball is still baseball. When the Os played terrible, I would go focus on the Brewers or the A’s or Mariners(who were almost as frustrating as the Os) and follow along with former Orioles, rooting for all of them. That will all stop by tonight, and I will miss it until next February, when pitchers and catchers report. If I’m still here, I’ll be here.    Go Os…
    • We have to wait and see. But it shouldn’t matter as you have to beat whomever you play.
