Bill Werber passes away at 100 - Marylander & MLB player

Until today, Bill Werber - starting 3B for the 1940 World Series champion Reds- was the oldest living major leaguer at 100.

He was born and raised in Maryland, though I'm sorry to say he made the mistake of going to Duke, where he became the school's first basketball All American. Werber went on to play 11 years in the big leagues.

I wrote to him a couple of times over the years, and got him to sign a copy of his autobiography Memories of a Ballplayer. The thing I'll never forget in that book is when he describes his early days with the Yankees, including "meeting" Babe Ruth by getting peed on by the Sultan of Swat while his back was turned in the shower.

Rookies have it pretty easy these days.

The Fox Sports article on him (link below) describes how he remained a baseball fan all these years, and he frequently wrote letters to Bud Selig about how the game could be improved: such as not allowing women to sing the national anthem, and doing something about the long hair on the players these days.

That must have been an honor.

It's pretty awesome that there was someone still alive in 2009 who played with Babe Ruth, who retired in 1935.

But I can't help laughing when old guys campaign hard to return the world to the way it was in 1935. Some people just never tire of trying to stuff all that stuff back in Pandora's box.
