UMD DUKE Thread

I think I'm finally on the "Gary has to go" train. No ACC team should ever lose to another ACC team by that much. I don't care how good Duke is - and they're plenty good, and hats off to them - but that just shouldn't happen.

I'm beginning to think the Morgan State game was less aberration than norm.

Does anyone think Booth would be a good replacement?

No, too inexperienced.

This is one of the top jobs in the country. It may not have the tradition of an Indiana but its smack dab in the middle of the nation's most fertile recruiting ground. A young, hungry coach that can recruit will take this team to the Sweet 16 several times.

Jamie Dixon (Pitt), Jay Wright (Villanova), Anthony Grant (VCU) are all names that I would inquire.

No way. They need someone with a nice track record. They should have their pick from mid-major coaches IMO. Since plenty of those mid-majors land better talent than the Terps, imagine what one of those guys could do with the UMCP resources.

It's really a shame what Gary's lazy recruiting has done to this program post-championship. I think he got arrogant and thought he could do whatever he wanted after that, so he just quit recruiting all together. Patsos left, the new guys weren't as good as he was, and now the Terps get nothing but leftovers. Unfortunately, I think Gary looks at his championship banner and decides that it must all be someone else's fault of just plain bad luck.

Other than the Baltimore connection promoting Booth does no good. He is not known as a skilled recruiter and has zero exp. as a head coach. If a change is made go with one of the young lions. Jay Wright of Villanova is familar with the recruiting area and would probably be thrilled with the job. Mike Brey of ND is another and the Gonzaga coach Mark Few is a heck of a coach.

I hate to pile on here (because you are really getting a good beating for this :P), but IF you are going to change coaches under the present circumstances you have to do two things:

1) Go in a completely different direction. If you don't want your current coach it is likely because they aren't leading the team in the direction you want, so you don't hire someone from the same group (unless you are the Cleveland Browns...)

2) Find a coach that you believe is at the very least as good as the one they are replacing. They don't have to be Bobby Knight coming out of retirement, but you want someone with enough of a track record that you can project to success in your situation.

Someone like (among those already mentioned) Jeff Caple, who built up the Virginia Commonwealth program and is doing well at Oklahoma (similar to how Gary Williams did at BC and Ohio State), and who knows the region for recruiting and knows the conference from his playing days would be a good choice (even as a Dookie :D). Same for Mike Brey, who is Bethesda-born and a DeMatha grad, and coached at Duke and Delaware.

If this were five years from now, the program is back on the right track, Williams is retiring under his own terms and Booth has shown himself a plus on the bench and in recruiting, then you talk about Keith Booth. Now, though, he isn't the answer (unless the question is "Who will replace Pat Kennedy at Towson next year?")

Why do you think Keith Booth would be a good HC at TU?

Baltimore kid, local legend, learning the ropes under a great coach. The kind of guy Towson is hoping they have in Ambrose with the football program, and a change from the "coach-centric" basketball program around Pat Kennedy that he has not earned.

    • Good point on the age.  I think it would have to be someone like Nate George from this year's draft just blowing up next year. The story would be how everyone missed on him because he played in a cold weather state.
    • First, Schmidt is having a better year than Cole. Second, the O's teed off Ragans and Lugo last time they faced them.
    • Elias needs to use better judgement when he dumpster dives, prepare better for the high percentage chance that his dumpster diving pickups will fail, and increase usage of other means to get pieces. Bullpen usage is another problem, but it’s hard to effectively juggle flaming torches. A wrong move burns badly
    • I can see the case for Mountcastle based on defense alone, but what has Kjerstad done to warrant that kind of treatment? Is it the .505 OPS he’s put up since coming back? The overall .438 ML OPS since getting hit in the head? I’m as bummed as anyone that his season got derailed, but if you’re talking about where they are right now — he’s not your huckleberry. As for O’Hearn, he’s 8 for his last 23 (.348), with 3 doubles. That feels a little like the “getting himself together” that you referenced. He had an awful month-long slump, but he also has an extended track record (over 1.5 seasons) of excelling in the role he’s now back in, as the platoon LH 1B/DH guy. He had a 125 wRC+ in those 750 PAs as an Oriole until 8/20, which is roughly when Mountcastle went out.  I’d be good with Kjerstad DHing against LH starters, because there’s good reason to think he hits them better than O’Hearn. And if they want to play both O’Hearn and Kjerstad against some RHPs, in order to set up the potential of Mountcastle coming in to PH against a lefty reliever, I’m down for that too. But the primary alignment is going to (and should) be the Mountcastle/O’Hearn duo we’ve gotten accustomed to seeing.
    • The Achilles heel for this team is going to be the unit that doesn't step up in the postseason. I can easily see scenarios where: the bullpen is hot and provides good performances but the offense sputters and isn't clutch the offense comes up big but the bullpen blows games late starting pitching tosses some clunkers (not really likely with Burnes and Eflin) and they can't recover the defense sucks and gives opponents extra outs to work with, blowing games open when the bullpen or SP would have been able to escape and continue We've seen all of these units falter at one point or another during this season.  We've also seen all of these units perform very well at different times throughout the season.  So, we'll see what turns out to be the Achilles heel for the Orioles in the playoffs starting next week.
    • I agree I missed the mark on a correct forum, and ask a moderator to please relocate to Rants as that game annoyed me yesterday. I appreciate the strong moderators here and know I'm not one of them.     Sorry for making it worse at a tough moment.    I won't bump it again, even ironically if we kick their butts in the playoffs.
