From that Torre thread there was talk that some think Andy MacPhail is a better GM than Brian Cashman, despite having a lesser resume.

So what do you think?

Kind of a tough question. On one hand, I say MacPhail hasn't had enough time to be judged yet, and on the other, I say any fool could buy every premiere free agent out there if given free reign of the checkbook. I think we won't know the answer to this for a few years down the road. If the Orioles start making progress and his plan of young pitching and solid defense starts paying dividends, than I think MacPhail wins. If the plan tanks, then it has to go to Cashman. Too early to tell is my answer to the poll.

I don't think you can compare 2 GM's that have completely different resources.
Exactly.

Any "bad" contracts that Cashman has given out aren't really bad because they didn't hurt the Yankees. When a risky guy flopping isn't a concern, you can take many more risks.

I'm not going to vote on this poll, but I will tell you this :

If Cashman took this job 18 months ago instead of MacPhail, Cashman would likely be taking a similar approach.

But really, you're comparing apples and oranges here.

How about pursuing FA talent though? MacPhail has shown a history of avoiding the top FA talent when he was with the Twins, Cubs and now Orioles. Cashman went after it even before the YES money when he signed Mussina and Giambi.

You mean when he still had Steinbrenner money and "we're the top dog in the biggest media market in America" money? Yeah, he was really scraping along there.

I guess Mussina and Giambi were just big Twisted Sister fans.

I think you're underestimating the Yankees affinity for free agents prior to Cashman's tenure. Let's not pretend that Cashman arrived and said, "Okay Steinbrenner, this is how we're gonna do it."

Looks like its the world against JT on this one.

I echo mike's sentiments. Give a guy a blank checkbook with (apparently) no limit and he should succeed. The fact that the MFY's have outspent several countries over the last decade and have not won a WS in 8 years makes one question Cashman's job performance.
