10 day rule after being optioned

When does the clock start for the 10 days when someone gets sent down to the minors? I just feel like sending Ortiz down when he was looking very comfortable and while Mateo is a black hole in the lineup will hurt for the next ten days. Yes they can have Gunnar play some SS, but it seems like they were trying to limit bouncing him around and establishing him as the everyday 3B and we dont really have other options at SS.

Was yesterday day 1 as the day he was optioned, and today day 2? Or is today day 1 and yesterday day 0?

Looking forward to having Ortiz back up with the big club and Westburg getting a shot, hopefully sooner than later.

I agree Ortiz should be playing over Mateo but we have Urias back up so we’ll be aright

Even with Ortiz in AAA, they still have 3 players, maybe 4, on the active roster that can play shortstop.

And Mountcastle used to be a shortstop in the minors IIRC.

Mountcastle can play shortstop in the same manner that Ty Wiggington once played shortstop for the O's.

Ortiz was up as a backup/utility guy. Elias knew what he was doing when he sent him down. Maybe it is a matter of time before Mateo gets replaced but pretty clear he gets at least 10 days and probably longer. Will be interesting now if Mateo or Urias is treated as the starter or the backup. Either way, Ortiz is further down the depth chart as long as Gunnar, Frazier, and Urias are healthy. Even if there is an injury he probably comes back as the utility guy for now.

Mateo is playing absolutely lights out at shortstop. I think best case scenario is that Ortiz is nearly as good defensively as Mateo. Because Mateo is one of the very best shortstops in the MLB.

It certainly was lights out last night when Mateo booted what should have been an inning-ending DP to get Seager up there with the bases loaded.  He does make the dazzling plays, but sometimes he boots the easiest ones.  Only Kike Hernandez has more errors at short than Jorge this season.

Mateo is on pace for 18 runs saved this season. That is elite.

I had turned it off by then but it seemed to me like he went on tilt a little even when Santander played Jung's double into a triple.

He struck out Adolis to open the 4th, and had Jung in a deep hole before Jung pinged it the other way.

Its still just one turn ago Best on Best he won many of his matchups against several of Toronto's best hitters in the world.

Are you talking about Rtor/yr?

Because that's at 15 with him playing 135 games worth of innings.

He's had 41 games started out of 51 which is a pace for 130 games and that's assuming that his lack of offense doesn't result in less playing time going forward.
