  1. 1. What would be your reaction if the Os DFA’d Mateo?

I don't believe that there's a whole lot extra to get out of his talent than what he's shown the past two seasons. It's awesome that he's had moments of absolute dominance, but he is what he is.

I went with what are they thinking because I think he has solid value as a trade piece and if not, I would rather have him on the team for this year as a backup.

If they DFA'd him before the trade deadline, I'd think that was a pretty bad call.

Later on this season or in the offseason, I could see it happening.

None of the above.

Couldn't they have worked out some sort of a trade?

You can DFA someone and THEN work out a trade, as we did with Spenser Watkins.

dude just helped win the game today with his speed. No way would we just DFA him. Ridiculous. Is his calling better as a defensive replacement/pinch runner? Well yeah, but he still retains value on this team.

He has trade value and probably would succeed like he did with the Os in a lower pressure, play every day scenario for a team that can afford to weather the fallow times because they are not in a pennant race.

Yea.  That was my first thought.  So “I don’t get it” as in, I have to imagine he could be traded for at least a very small return.

Ah.   I guess I could see that and in that scenario (assuming a small return) “it’s about time!”

Mateo has a good amount of value as a utility player, especially for a playoff team.  Plays like today where Mateo scored on a ball a lot of players would have barely got to 3rd.  Those plays aren't common in the regular season but are a lot more common in the postseason, where the value of scoring 1 run is magnified.

Why would you DFA Mateo in any world?  Can you argue he shouldn't play everyday, yes, but he has value as a defensive player and a pinch runner.   If you DFA him he you are giving him to another organization 100%.
