Between Akin, Perez, and Voth it’s amazing to consider the record that we have considering the negative value that each of their terribleness has given/taken away from the team.

If we just had 3 “averageish” relievers instead of them, how much better off would we be?

I would throw in Givens to that mix but he wasn’t here long enough to really hurt us too much.

Anyone else think he got potholed?

Possibly, all it takes explanation from an Orioles Dr.  Of the tens of thousands that have gone on the DL now IL-to the best of my knowledge MLB has never presented a challenge.

Yes .. but we have had the totally unexpected gifts of Cano, Coulombe … just goes to show you .. no matter how much evaluators think they know, the games are played by human beings and will always surprise us both negatively and positively.  Baseball is life.

...and where would that ridiculous assumption come from?

I could be misunderstanding your post, but it sounded like you’re comparing the O’s to a sinking ship.

Probably he was just talking about our middle relief corps.

    • 1) I have no interest in trading Mateo or Urias and have never said I want them gone. 2)  Elias was bringing up Mayo before he hurt his ribs. 3) Holliday’s first ML game was April 10. Elias obviously thought he was ready. He even said so. He also said he made a mistake.  I also never said Holliday had nothing left to prove in AAA after 75 at bats in 2023.  That’s a lie. I actually said I didn’t think he would be up until June (after super 2).
    • It's a delicate equation because there's a balance between hit tool, walk rate, and slg %.  They work together and it's hard to separate one from the other in regards to success. BA has the most noise.  No doubt.  So my statement is not entirely accurate. Hit tool is one of the more predictive, as commonly but imperfectly expressed by BA, as you can't get to your power without contact and you won't continue to draw walks without power. In essence, everything is downstream from hit tool. But it's been a decade since I read about it and am open to seeing newer information.
    • They did win two dogfight type games against Cincy. You could say they aren't a contender but if those two games go the other way, they are 6-6 and probably in good position for a WC spot.  But yeah, the analytics prowess tells me what we already know: the Ravens CAN hang with, and even dominate, any team in the NFL on a good day. So a deep run will never be out of the question IMO. But what can they do on their average day? The past several years show that on their average day, when facing a good opposing team and coach, they will consistently do just enough to lose a close game.
    • Sorry Pickle Trickle, I gotta side with the Big Dukaroo here.   The OBP matters in regard to Holliday.  .431 across 346 plate appearances...that's nothing to sneeze at.  And that's up from the .396 OBP he put up at Norfolk in AAA in '23, in an albeit smaller sample size.   If we're to use your mantra of "what actually happened", it looks like Holliday got better at AAA baseball across '23 to '24.  I'd venture to say that there's nothing else he really needs to do in the minor leagues to assert himself as a great prospect. What he needs to do is to work on hitting major league pitching.  I think everyone should agree that he can handle the minors. In regard to Mayo, he's got a .921 OPS across all his minor league stops.  There's nothing else he really needs to do in the minors.  He needs to hit major league pitching.  Putting up another .900+ OPS in the minors isn't going to do him any good. Yeah, they both struggled in the majors last year but that's part of it.  Putting up more elite seasons in the minors isn't solving the problem of why they struggled in the majors last year.
    • So now you think that Elias agreed with you that they had nothing to prove in AAA, and should trade Urias and Mateo, amongst others, to clear space for them, and that what happened in 2024 justifies that? LOL. Clearly Elias didn't think Mayo was ready at any point last season, as he wasn't brought up except for injury, and they traded for Jimenez anyway. He also brought up Holliday- nothing to do with service time BTW, as he was brought up before the deadline- saw him for 2 weeks and sent him back to AAA, presumably for the year, b/c he likewise would not have been called up besides for injury. It takes a certain kind of tenacious delusion to have spent all of last off-season declaring Holliday and Mayo had "nothing to prove" in AAA, and multiple vets should be traded to clear roles for them, and to watch what actually happened in the 2024 season and cling to the idea that you were right all along. LMAO, even.
    • That is  incorrect. It’s pretty far down the list of predictive variables in every comparative study I have seen.  Things like walk percentage are significantly better predictors of future success.
    • They didn’t perform in a SSS. 🤷‍♂️…and Elias thought they were ready.  So you are saying you know more than Elias right?  I thought you hated it when people acted like they know more than the pros or are you just being a hypocrite?
