I mean, there is plenty they could have done. They have some of the most attractive BP arms in the league, they could have shopped.

They can’t QO him because he’s already be QO’d once in his career. The new CBA says a player can’t be QO’s twice in a career. So I guess they thought it was better to keep him and get the pick.

No and I'm not going to. When trying to quickly show the not being apples to apples I went by raw rankings. Over 60 players separated Holliday from Gilbert on the rankings and as you pointed out that gap probably has only grown. 

To be fair the Mets would have wanted a Mayo or Norby from us and that's too much for Verlander. Rather give up lotto tickets and squeeze something out of Flaherty.

I didn't say he was. I was admittedly being simplistic but obviously they were looking for value for an elderly, not nearly as good Verlander. I personally wouldn't have given up anything of major value for him. I don't really think anyone on here would have. My main point in responding was that the poster seemed to be taking Elias to task for not getting Verlander.

People say no more trades but what if a player is DFA’d?  Teams still have the 7-10 days to trade them. I could see us picking a player up off of waivers if need be. Either after they clear or a small trade. Especially for a RP.

You used a very key word there "used to". That's not the reality of the game right now. It's very hard to "buy" prospect because no one can really afford to sell them. Because of the expense of star contracts in today's game, no team (except the Mets) can really afford to have a roster of them.
