I accidentally spiked guys on similar plays to that multiple times.  It was never on purpose.  Sometimes your foot just bounces off the bag at an unfortunate angle. 

That what it looked like to me. The inertia of his upper foot just slid over the bag and went up as the rest of his body approached the bag.
