Popular Post OsFanSinceThe80s
Mateo is giving nothing to the team right now. Mateo is supposed to at least be elite with his defense and he just isn't right now. Mateo is fast, but they have other players who can pinch run and also bring something useful to the team. Even if Gunnar is going to be out temporarily there's too much talent in the organization to just let Mateo play SS everyday until Gunnar's back. I doubt the Orioles will do anything, but Mateo is a net negative right now and his hitting in April was merely a mirage. Mateo can't bunt so in the ninth inning he couldn't even move Westburg over to 2B. It's a pennant race and everyone needs to contribute in someway even if they're role players. 6 1

That's also my solution get cash considerations or a DSL prospect for Mateo.
Frobby
See if we can palm him off before the trade deadline. If not, release him. Time to let Ortiz have that spot.
Orioles0615
He's the Orioles love child, they will run him into the ground.
gtman55
He needs to go. Hyde loves him for some reason. He was good for a month this year. The rest of this year he's stunk. Unfortunately, I don't see anyone giving the Orioles anything beyond cash considerations.
Alasdaire
I would rather have Mateo on the bench than Frazier. Mateo's defense and speed aren't good/useful enough to justify the holes in his bat, but they're still usable skills from the bench. Does Frazier do a single thing well? But Joey should have been starting over Jorge a long time ago now. If Hyde felt like he needed some reason to justify the optics of sitting Mateo down for another rookie, he has it after these past few games. Pat Kelly
Will be DFA'd Thursday, off day. Ortiz will be up. Elias will make the call.

I just hope Gunnar doesn't end up on the 10 Day IL from tweaking his back.
Tbone83
Would be nice to include him in a package for whatever middle relief they (hopefully) trade for before the deadline. Obviously a lesser piece, but addition by subtraction at this point. Send teams his game tapes from April only.

Mateo has failed to make makeable plays at least 4 times in the last 9 games, every one of them in a consequential spot. His offense isn’t bad, it’s HORRENDOUS. He’s absolutely forfeited his privilege to play for a contending team. Frazier has flaws but he’s been WAY, WAY better than Mateo for the last three months. It’s not even a close call. Yes he does something well. He is a gamer. He can get the bunt down when needed, make contact to get a runner in from 3rd with less than 2 out, get clutch hits in the late innings and even clutch homeruns in the late innings. His defense is not awesome but it's not dreadful either. Mateo can run fast and he used to be a reliable defender. He's blown 3 plays in the last 5 games late in the game that have been costly. Frazier is contributing a lot more than Mateo at this point.
24fps
DFA and bring up Ortiz. The only question is when and the sooner the better. Best case the O's can trade him but it won't be for much.

I dunno who downvoted this post but that was silly. Everything here is spot on. I was a big Mateo defender this off-season but he’s no longer defensible and he hasn’t been for quite some time. The defense is no longer elite and has been bad in some recent big moments. He hardly ever gets on base so the speed isn’t really a threat to steal anymore. Sad to see because he’s a good, likable guy with tremendous talent and I think he’s a good teammate but he needs to go. He’s worn out his welcome.
